The remains of Amanda King, a woman from Bethlehem, New York, who vanished over a decade ago, were reportedly recovered last month in Burden Pond Preserve on Mill Street and Campbell Avenue in Troy.
On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, police confirmed the buried skeleton found near the pond on October 20, 2014, was of Amanda King, a 28-year-old missing woman last seen at the Conifer Park Rehabilitation Center in Glenville, NY, on October 16, 2013.
According to multiple reports, Amanda King was reported missing on October 16, 2013, when she disappeared without a trace after she was discharged from the Conifer Park Rehabilitation Center, which helps people suffering from addiction.
King’s concerned family has been trying to find her for more than a decade. Months after her disappearance, King’s family revealed to Time Union that she suffered from heroin addiction.
At the time, Arthur King of Delmar, Amanda's father, told the publications his daughter began using drugs in Bethlehem High School and struggled with Heroin addiction until she was last seen at the Conifer Park Rehabilitation Center in Glenville, NY.
The publication reported Amanda King was seen in Albany several times throughout November 2013, shortly after her disappearance. At the time, the family offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to her whereabouts.
Over a decade later, her skeletal remains were found in Burden Pond Preserve. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Amanda King was at the Conifer Park Rehabilitation Center for court-mandated treatment
In 2013, Amanda King’s father, Arthur, told the Times Union nearly two weeks before the disappearance, his daughter called him for a ride from what looked like a crack house. Recalling the incident, he said:
"She always called me, usually every week. Very often when she called me it was because she needed money, needed a ride, needed a favor. I was the go-to guy. I was the last guy she could count on."
Amanda's father said he picked her up from Albany before driving her to Conifer Park for court-mandated treatment over her arrest for drug possession. Amanda was at the center for 10 days before she disappeared. He said:
"They couldn't keep her. Amanda decided she had to leave. She just couldn't go through the treatment."
At the time Amanda's concerned father said the family was desperate for answers in the wake of her disappearance.
"We're trying to keep our hopes alive, but it gets harder every day. Originally I was hoping we'd find her wandering somewhere. Now I just want to know what happened to her."
Amanda’s father revealed his daughter disappeared a month before her 29th birthday. Authorities have yet to disclose the cause of death.
