The grief-stricken family of 18-year-old Latavion Johnson is mourning the death of the teen, identified as the victim killed in the Tuskegee University homecoming shooting on Sunday, November 4, 2024.

The Macon County Coroner's Office identified Latavion Johnson as the teenager who died during the shooting that also injured 16 others late Sunday night at Tuskegee University after homecoming celebrations.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Authorities, gunfire erupted at West Commons on-campus apartments just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Police on arrival found Latavion Johnson dead at the scene. Johnson was not affiliated with the university.

Twelve injured victims sustained gunshot wounds and four of them suffered injuries unrelated to the gunfire. The victims were transported to hospitals in Montgomery and Lee counties.

Meanwhile, police arrested Jaquez Myrick in connection to the shooting. Myrick was charged with possession of a machine gun after he was found with a handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device while attempting to leave the scene.

Myrick was not charged with the murder of the victim. The circumstances behind the incident are under investigation. In a post, authorities added:

"ALEA is asking for the public’s assistance in this case. Anyone with information is asked to please submit tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI and upload any digital files regarding this incident online at: fbi.gov/tuskegeeshooting24."

Community offers support as family mourns Latavion Johnson’s death at Tuskegee University

Latavion Johnson’s family is mourning the death of the teen, identified as the victim killed in the Tuskegee University shooting. In a Facebook post, the victim’s parents penned a devastating tribute to the teen. Johnson’s father, Larry Johnson, wrote,

“Latavion Johnson never in a MILLION YEARS I WOULD SEE YOU WALK AWAY FROM ME FOREVER. But you get your REST CAUSE WE ARE GONNA MAKE SURE JUSTICE IS SERVED.”

Meanwhile, the victim’s mother, Tamika Johnson, shared her son’s picture in a post, seemingly grieving the loss. The post was flooded with comments from community members who offered their support to the grieving family. Sabrina Pennington wrote:

“My heart goes out to you and your family. This breaks my heart. Please reach out if you all need anything.”

A family member added:

“Cousin Larry Johnson aka Tuck... my condolences & prayers to you and the family.”

The incident reportedly occurred just hours after Tuskegee University’s 100th homecoming celebrations. Social media videos captured the panicked voices of individuals as gunfire erupted at the university campus.

The University canceled classes on Monday as Special Agents from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) continue to collect and analyze evidence to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
