Is General Hospital's Lulu the reason Sasha and Cody are breaking up?

General Hospital fans were thrown a curve ball when it was revealed that not only was Holly Sutton (Emma Samms) Sasha Gilmore’s (Sofia Mattsson) mother, but also former super spy Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) was her father.

Robert himself wasn’t completely surprised by the news but was still angry with Holly for keeping him and Sasha apart for decades. The revelation has put a crimp in Sasha’s relationship with Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) because now they’re cousins, and it might be a set-up for the returning Lulu Falconeri (Alexa Havins).

Sam’s death opens the door to other possibilities

While he awaits news on whether or not Lulu’s liver transplant will save her life, her ex-husband Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) has repeatedly professed his love for Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). It turned out that Sam was a viable donor and had been getting ready to undergo the transplant surgery to save Lulu. Considering Monaco is exiting the show, fans are jumping to the conclusion that she’ll die on the operating table.

That scenario seems a bit too obvious, but viewers are holding on to that since she’s said all of her goodbyes to her family and friends. The risk is far greater for Lulu, who has a dangerous blood clot in her liver’s much-needed blood-delivering vein. Since it’s known that Alexa Havins will be taking over the role of Lulu, the odds are that the surgery will succeed, and she’ll soon awaken from her years-long coma.

General Hospital has laid the groundwork for Cody, who visited with Lulu and spoke to her while she lay comatose. If Sam dies as expected, not only will her kids be without their mother, but Dante will be without his girlfriend. And since he and Lulu are divorced, Lulu is now single. When she awakens and recovers, she’ll be looking to put her life back together. As such, she’ll eventually be free to date whoever she wants, and since Cody’s not able to be with Sasha, he’ll be a possible dating candidate for Lulu.

The long game

Dante, without his partner and still harboring feelings for Lulu, may also want to get back together with her once he recovers from Sam’s death. Clearly, everyone will need ample time to get over Sam’s death, Sasha and Cody’s inevitable breakup, and Lulu to get her life in order. This will create a scenario for a slow burn where Cody, Dante’s best friend, gets to know Lulu little by little, and eventually, a love triangle could emerge.

These situations are common in soaps, and it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for the show to set up a long game whereby Cody and Lulu, by virtue of being in each others’ orbits, may start to find an attraction.

This storyline could be good if done right. Fans are already unhappy that Sam is being killed off, but those emotions are bittersweet because they’re also looking forward to Lulu’s return. No matter how you slice it, things in Port Charles continue to get crazy and dramatic, and a love triangle might be just what General Hospital needs.
