General Hospital's Steve Burton explains being celebrated over being tolerated

After a trip to New York City with his current girlfriend Michelle Lundstrom, General Hospital star Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) shared some unforgettable moments with fans on social media. The actor always has words of wisdom to share with his fans, and recently discussed an important matter that he felt his followers should know.

Go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated.

That was a quote from minister and inspirational speaker Paul F. Davis that General Hospital’s Steve Burton recently opened an Instagram post. He continued, noting that his video time was limited, writing:

But it’s real talk, limiting exposure to negative people around you will help your mental state and mindset. 💯. If the people in your circle are not lifting you up, it’s time to reassess. Cutting people off may seem extreme, but is it? Because most of the time we do settle.

Burton then used a quote that has often been attributed to George Washington because he once wrote it, but it originated in 1595 by French Jesuits as part of a series of 110 rules that they came up with:

It’s better to be alone than in bad company.

He then referred to a passage from the Bible from Proverbs 13:20 that stated:

He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.

He finished by giving an important summary of his point:

You have one life, don’t settle.

In the video, Burton explained that he had just finished a workout and was a big fan of quotes that help people. He remarked:

We all have struggles. Sometimes it’s just tough to get through the day. You know, we all go through adversity. We have to overcome obstacles in life every single day. We have to suffer. And this quote is pretty simple in the sense that it’s: go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated…Are you celebrated in your circle? In your circle of friends, are you celebrated? Are they lifting you up or are they trying to drag you down?

Burton then continued:

So this quote resonates with a lot of people and especially me because you get to take personal inventory of who you’re spending your time with. Who you’re giving your energy to. Are they lifting you up or bringing you down? If they’re bringing you down, limit the time or cut them out of your life. If it’s a friend, it’s easier. If it’s family, it’s not so easy. But with family, we can definitely protect ourselves. Limit our time around negative people who are trying to bring you down, not lift you up. You have value. Remember that. Go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated.

Burton’s words struck a chord with his followers, who all felt that he had made their day with his post. @shannonsackett1980 responded with the well-thought out:

I had to get away from my x husband because he was always negative, bringing me down. There was nothing positive. I finally, after 10yrs [of] being with him had enough & divorced him. I feel so much better & been surrounding myself with positive energy & I tell you that I feel so much better & more alive. You really do see & feel a lot better when you're not around people who are always negative.

And @patsygallardo summed up the collective fan response with:
