Nearly 30 years ago, General Hospital's Lilly Melgar went off to that great soap in the sky when her character, Lily Corinthos, wife to Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), died in a car explosion meant to kill her husband. Now, Melgar is taking a different type of journey on Amazon Prime's The Wanderer: Destination Unknown.

Vancouver: Lilly Escapes the Ordinary
Forget about kids growing up fast on soaps; Melger was looking at an empty nest after her daughter went off to college. She decided to take a leap of faith and take The Wanderer: Destination Unknown's invitation to travel to new places and gain new experiences.
"Travel has been so much a part of my healing process," Melgar tells Soap Central, opening up about some recent losses in her life. "Our of nowhere, The Wanderer invited me to do an episode in Vancouver, British Columbia [in Canada]. It was my very first time there, my first time traveling 'solo.'"
"Solo" is in quotes because, of course, there was a crew accompanying Melgar to capture her experience, but one of the goals of the series is to show what it's like to travel alone and find out what people can learn about themselves.
"It was truly significant for me on so many levels," Melgar says. "This is a completely new chapter in my life because I realized with my daughter [Sofia] moving into her dorm, I had never lived alone."
"They give you two hours to pack," Melgar reveals. "It was really all about venturing out of your comfort zone."

Traveling at Super-Speeds
Among the adventures Melgar experienced while visiting our neighbors to the north was a turn at bobsledding! "The one in Whistler that I rode is one of the fastest tracks in the world," the actress says. "I was really close to not doing it. But then that adventurous side of me that's game to do things said, 'Girl...let's do it!' I get to now say I played on one of the fastest tracks in the world. I'm doing this! It was the wildest thing I've ever done, and I've done a lot!"
Melgar says you can't truly know what it's like to ride in a bobsled until you've done it. "There's a part of the track you hit where the G-force is so strong," she marvels. "You cannot control your body. I had a laughing attack from the adrenaline."
"I can't wait to go back with my daughter," the actress adds. "Vancouver has the cleanest air that I've ever breathed. This made me so happy and I never would have discovered it if it weren't for this show."

Taking Flight Back to GH
Melgar flew to Canada on a plane, which reminded her of a very memorable encounter she had in the sky shortly after Lily was blown to smithereens in that car bomb.
"There was a group of us from ABC Daytime traveling to Miami for a long weekend," Melgar recollects. "On my flight home, a stewardess's jaw dropped when she realized it was me. Her eyes welled up. She said, 'You don't understand! I cried so much [when Lily died]. I was so devasted by your death on General Hospital that I had to take time off from work."
The Port Charles registry is littered with characters who've miraculously come back from the dead -- Laura (Genie Francis), Jason (Steve Burton), Lesley (Denise Alexander), Duke (Ian Buchanan), A.J. (Sean Kanan). The list goes on. Is Melgar open to GH reaching and revealing that perhaps Lily was yanked from the car to safety before the big bang occurred? Would she still be legally wed to Sonny after all these years? Would she have had Sonny's child? The story possibilities are endless.
"I don't know," Melgar muses. "It seems like another lifetime for me. Who knows?"
The Wanderer is TripAdvisor's series, available on Prime Video. This season is called The Wanderer: Destinations Unknown. (Melgar's episode was made in partnership with Aspercreme.)
