The tears were flowing on General Hospital when Anna Devane arrested the man she loved, and Valentin Cassadine was escorted to an international prison. It wasn't the first time Anna and Valentin played out the exact same scenario, but at the time, they had not confessed their undying love for one another yet. This time, everything was different, and it seemed like the end.

Valentin's General Hospital time is up — for now

Valentin had been on the run since last summer, skipping Port Charles with Charlotte after Anna had warned him that the FBI knew he was leading Pikeman and was gunning for him. Anna regretted her decision to let Valentin escape almost immediately. Within weeks, she learned that Lulu might die and wanted Charlotte home to be with her mother.

Thankfully, Lulu lived, so Anna changed the reason for her quest as she wanted a happy reunion for mother and daughter after four long years. When she finally caught up with Valentin in Buenos Aires, he let her take Charlotte home while reminding her that he'd always love her.

Just days later, Valentin was back in Port Charles because he needed to see Charlotte one last time. He also got to see Anna — when she cuffed him and placed him under arrest. But does that mean it's the end for this popular pair?

The one that got away?

According to Finola Hughes, Valentin is the type of man that women like Anna can't get out of their system.

"I do feel that this is one of those relationships where it’s like the person you’re not supposed to have an affair with that you constantly keep going back to," Hughes told Soap Opera Digest in an interview. "I do feel that he is somebody like that — one of those bad boys that you just can’t help liking a lot."

Hughes noted the attraction that Anna and Valentin have felt toward each other since they were spies in training at the WSB years ago. She doesn't think something like that will go away so soon.

"I do feel like there’s always that sort of romantic attraction between the two of them and it doesn’t seem to dissipate," Hughes said. 'It’s been decades! I think they liked each other then, back in the day, and then it came to fruition, so I don’t know [that it’s over for good]."

While it might not be over for good, it is over for now, something that baffles Hughes.

"I don’t know why they nipped it in the bud," she said. "It really could have worked quite well. I don’t know — some people remain in relationships for a long time on soaps, and then others, they just keep chopping up. I’m not sure. It’s gonna be a long and windy day before Anna finds somebody else that ticks all those boxes!"
