Has Gio’s anger at Dante and Brook Lynn dragged on too long on General Hospital?

On General Hospital, it's not uncommon for characters' lives to be devastated by a betrayal from someone close to them. GH was firing on all cylinders earlier this year when Gio discovered the truth about his parentage at the Nurses' Ball. However, that was nearly five months ago, and the storyline has barely inched ahead, with Gio still just as furious with Dante and Brook Lynn.

Gio's anger made sense at first on General Hospital

At the Nurse's Ball, Gio (Giovanni Mazza) learned that two people close to him, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton), were his biological parents. As expected, this caused a significant amount of turmoil for the violinist, and he found himself unable to extend forgiveness and accept them. Gio's still expressing the same discontent with his parents, and something has got to give. He can barely make eye contact with either of them, and despite appearing at Monica Quartermaine's (Leslie Charleson) memorial service, he is keeping his distance from both of them.

Initially, it made sense why he struggled to accept them as his parents because everything he knew about his life was a lie. However, anytime he's close to either parent, the tension still lingers, and he doesn't allow himself to move forward. Any attempt from Dante or Brook Lynn is immediately shot down, and he goes out of his way to avoid interaction. It's great that he has Emma (Braedyn Bruner) to lean on because with a town full of people calling out to him with open arms, he ignores most of them.

To some extent, his rage toward Brook Lynn makes sense. She made the difficult decision to give him up for adoption, but it's not her fault that he remained in her orbit. She was just as left in the dark as he was. However, putting her aside, Dante didn't even know there was a pregnancy at all. How could he be there for Gio if he was unaware of his existence? Holding on to anger toward Dante or even Brook Lynn is stifling the character, and it's leaving Gio disconnected from most of the characters on General Hospital.

Gio's allegiance to Sonny makes it more confusing

Gio's anger would be less of a problem for the story if he weren't accepting of some family members. After kissing Emma, Gio realized he couldn't live under the same roof as the woman he had feelings for, so he's relocating. He can't stand to live with Dante or Brook Lynn, but Sonny (Maurice Benard) was an acceptable choice. Forgoing the danger aspect of living with Sonny still raises questions of how he can forge a bond with him while ignoring his parents.

While it's true that Gio and Sonny have always remained somewhat close, with Sonny even funding his school, it's still questionable. Sonny is still related to Gio, and if Gio is still this conflicted about Dante, why is he able to treat his father differently? Living with Sonny comes with far more complications than living in the Quartermaine Mansion, so it's an odd choice. It also says a lot about the molasses-like nature of the storyline if, after all these months, Gio would rather live in the line of fire than with his mom and dad.

There was a lot of apathy surrounding the Gio character on General Hospital when he first appeared on the canvas. The reception to the character warmed drastically around the time of the Nurse's Ball and the electric scenes between Gio, Brook Lynn, and Dante. If this storyline continues beyond the current point without actual resolution or his anger subsiding, much of that goodwill with the viewers may evaporate. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so perhaps Gio can save the day this year and be the one bringing the pizza to 66 Harbor View Drive as a peace offering to his parents.
