Sigourney Weaver has recently addressed the question of whether she will reprise her iconic role as Ripley in a new Alien film, and her response shows that the possibility is still open! While nothing is officially confirmed, in an interview with Josh Horowitz Clips, Weaver revealed that she has met with Disney about a potential return to the franchise.
As per People, she said,
"So I don't know if it's going to happen, but I have had a meeting with Fox, Disney or whoever it is now, I have never felt the need [to reprise the role.] I was always like 'let her rest, let her recover.' But what Walter has written is, first of all, seems so true to me, as very much about the society that would incarcerate someone who has tried to help mankind, but she's a problem to them so she's sort of tucked away.
She has also emphasized that Walter Hill, who was a long-time friend and partner, has produced a 50-page script on what would happen to Ripley today, a notion that she considered interesting enough to contemplate seriously.
Weaver herself has stated that she has never tried to reprise the role, and that she wished to allow her to rest since the last time she appeared. Nevertheless, she was impressed by the fresh attitude of the script of Hill: she envisions Ripley as the character who made an attempt to assist humanity but turns out to be a burden on society.
Weaver has observed that the narrative has a more realistic version of Ripley and her life, although there is the presence of the Alien in the story. It would be different from the action-heavy style of previous installments, with the emphasis on character progression and storylines.
Weaver’s thoughts on returning to Ripley
Sigourney Weaver had pointed to the hard work involved in convincingly portraying Ripley, and Hill has managed to get her personality without turning her into a hackneyed figure. As Weaver notes, the script by Hill uses the power of Ripley, her anger, and her sense of humor to reflect the image that is authentic to her character.
According to People, she said,
"I think it's a very strong first 50 pages. I'm thinking about working with Walter to see what the rest of the story would be"
She also mentioned that the story would not entail the predictable air shaft chases and action-packed scenes but would provide a new viewpoint on the life of Ripley after her experiences with the Alien in the past. This tactic is an indication of a new character-based perspective of the franchise.
The role of the Alien in the story
As much as the Alien is the main issue in the narrative, Weaver made it evident that the emphasis would lie on the relationships that Ripley would have with society and the repercussions of her previous endeavors. The Xenomorph would yet be there, but the movie would focus on Ripley and her own personal character development rather than just create a movie based on animals making things go around.
This implies that a new Alien project would strike a balance between suspense, tension, and character development, which would present a different experience from the past movies.
Collaboration and script development
Weaver disclosed that she has been contemplating collaborating with Hill to bring the story out in 50 pages. The Xenomorph would still appear, but the film would emphasize Ripley’s journey and personal growth rather than relying solely on creature-based horror.
The pessimistic optimism of Weaver shows how much she respects Ripley as a character and wishes to come back only in case the script is good and still in the tone of the franchise.
Context from past appearances
Ripley is one of the most recognizable figures of the fiction films, which is why her performance by Weaver is one of the main factors behind the popularity of the Alien franchise. The fact that she took so much care to go back to the character is a testament to her belief in the integrity of the story that Ripley tells.
There has been a long speculation over whether Weaver would come back, and her recent statements suggest that it is more likely, given the right circumstances, especially with the character-driven script of Hill.
What fans can expect
Even though there has been no official announcement of such, the fact that Weaver is open implies hope to the fans. Provided the new Alien movie is made, it is likely to bring more insight into the character of Ripley as it will represent her strength, resilience, and humor.
The Alien would still be a major threat, but the story would also focus more on the views and experiences of Ripley, providing a new interpretation of the traditional franchise.
At this juncture, it is yet unclear but viable that Sigourney Weaver should be reprising her role in a new Alien movie. She has not made the full commitment, but the fact that she showed interest in Walter Hill's script and her talks with Disney show that a comeback might occur with the right conditions.
The next sequel would probably center on character-driven narration, the social issues that Ripley experiences, and the existence of the classic Alien - to give the fans something familiar and something new at the same time.
