By now, it's not news that A Minecraft Movie has performed wonderfully at the box office. This Jared Hess directorial was reportedly made with a $150 budget and was expected to earn somewhere in the ballpark of $60 to $70 million at the domestic market to Variety and Deadline. However, it smashed those expectations by crossing the $100 million mark within its first weekend, earning $162.8 million domestically, per Box Office Mojo. Add the international collection, and it grossed about $313 million globally.

For some, this was a surprise, since the recent game-to-screen adaptations have been either lackluster or underperformed. Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major success, Borderlands was a critical and financial misfire. However, a movie based on this Mojang Studios game was bound to be a success, according to those who knew how popular it was. There were a few other reasons for its success, including the meme-worthy material it offered to the game's fans. Even the film's Audience' verdict on Rotten Tomatoes reads:

"Beyond being a fertile meme-factory, A Minecraft Movie proves how much fun two men with beards can bring to the sandbox."

With all this goodwill, A Minecraft Movie continues its box office streak, and it currently holds the $876.2 mark in the worldwide market. So, it is about $125 million away from crossing the $1 billion mark. Until now, only one 2025 release has done this: Ne Zha 2, a Chinese blockbuster, still holding strong. So, will A Minecraft Movie join it in this record? Let's discuss the same.

A Minecraft Movie was released on April 4, 2025, and since then, it has been one of the top earners. At the time of writing this article, per Box Office Mojo, it has earned about $399 million domestically and about $476 million internationally. Based on these numbers, it seems like there is enough interest in this Hollywood movie beyond the United States. With this near-equal tally, the movie seems to be well on its way to success.

However, in the last few weeks, its steady reign was halted by Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Jake Shreier's Thunderbolts*, released in theaters. Whether the genre-bending horror film or the MCU tentpole, they must have eaten up a part of A Minecraft Movie's market.

On its opening weekend, Sinners topped the charts against the Jack Black starrer. It became bigger news since some publications like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety mentioned their surprise about its success. So, stars like Ben Stiller and Patrick Schwarzenegger criticized its manner of reporting.

Later, since its release on May 2, Thunderbolts* has topped the US box office market and is continuing to win over more audiences across the globe. In the coming weeks of May, a few most anticipated projects of 2025 are about to be released, which include:

  • Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning
  • Lilo & Stitch
  • Final Destination Bloodlines
  • Karate Kid: Legends

These movies can be a threat to A Minecraft Movie crossing the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. However, only a week ago, the studios revealed that they will be releasing a special Block Party Edition where the audience can enjoy the movie in a "meme-along" and sing-along experience.

While it may have helped its box office in its fifth weekend, no sources have reported how specifically. So, the fate of this video game adaptation depends on its fans and whether they continue to show interest after the release of other exciting projects.
