Why is SAG-AFTRA under fire? Backlash over Actor Award nominations explained

The Screen Actors Guild American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, also known as SAG-AFTRA, is facing criticism following the Actor Award nominations of this year. Reports suggest that the nominations have excluded every foreign language film and performance, despite those being notably praised and recognized at other awards.

Film fans and enthusiasts took to social media to claim that the Actor Awards have overlooked global cinema and have shown an alleged English-language bias. It is worth noting that no foreign language films received nominations across any motion picture categories at the 2026 Actor Awards.

Significant films such as Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, South Korea's No Other Choice, Brazil's The Secret Agent, Iran's It Was Just an Accident, and more were shut out. Notably, these titles had been nominated for Best Film and Best Non-English Language Film at the Golden Globes.

Internet reactions to international films being excluded from the 2026 Actor Awards nominations

Netizens took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their thoughts on the matter. Below are some of their remarks:

"The SAG Awards (now Actor Awards) did not nominate Fernanda Montenegro for CENTRAL STATION, nor Isabelle Huppert for ELLE, nor Yalitza Aparicio for ROMA, nor Fernanda Torres for I'M STILL HERE. As a whole, that group has little interest in performances in films not in English.", stated an X user.

"SAG members are a bunch of xenophobes. Like, what do you mean neither Sentimental Value nor The Secret Agent landed noms, but Kate Hudson and Odessa did?", commented another.

"SAG just hates international films and this will not happen with the Globes or the Oscars. This is what I am telling myself to keep from going insane.", shared a third.

SAG-AFTRA has not yet responded to these criticisms.

The 2026 Actor Awards nominations' film categories are led by Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another with seven nominations. It is the most in the history of the awards.
