The last film in The Equalizer franchise, The Equalizer 3, was shot in Italy.

Starring Denzel Washington, this 2023 action thriller is a sequel to The Equalizer 2 (2018). Directed by Antoine Fuqua, it follows the plot of Robert McCall, who is striving to safeguard his friends from the hands of a couple of gangsters in Italy.

Primary filming locations of The Equalizer 3, explored

According to The Cinema Holic, filming for The Equalizer 3 took place between 2022 and 2023, commencing in September 2022 and concluding by January 2023.

Within Italy, the main filming locations in the country include Campania and Rome.

Denzel Washington, in an interview clip about the film posted by ComingSoon, talked about his experience of shooting in Italy as well, as he stated:

“I’ve come to Italy for 31 years on vacation and I really began to understand a little bit - the culture, the history."

1) Campania, Italy

One of the most important shooting locations of the film is Campania in Southern Italy.

Within the area, the picturesque coastline stretch of Amalfi was one of the primary filming locations. Atrani was the main town where many of the scenes were shot. In this area, apart from the serene beach shots, some significant architecture and natural locations played a big role in the filming.

Denzel Washington plays the role of Robert McCall in the film. The scenes where McCall is seen taking a stroll on the roads were filmed at Via dei Dogi, 20, 84010 Atrani SA, Italy, as per Cinemaholic.

Another shooting location was Bar Antico Caffè Vittoria. It is located at Via Supportico Marinella, 4, 84010 Atrani SA, Italy.

As per The TrainLine, in this town, places including Santuario Santa Maria del Bando, Torre dello Ziro, and Veliero del Belvedere were also among the filming locations for The Equalizer 3.

While speaking to Moviefone, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua elucidated his reasons for choosing the Amalfi Coast and Atrani for the filming of The Equalizer 3, as he stated:

“So Italy just felt natural because Denzel goes there quite a bit and as well as myself. I wanted a place where he felt at home and comfortable and knew the language. So, the Amalfi Coast, of course, not only is it ideal, it’s just beautiful. This place, Atrani, where we filmed, is so old world; you feel like you’ve been transported back in time, and that was important to us.”

3) Rome, Italy

In the capital city of the country, Cinecittà Studios were primarily used for filming various important scenes in the film. It is an exuberant studio that encompasses an area of a whopping 400,000 square meters.

This studio is a crucial place in the world of Italian cinema, having an immense cultural and historical significance. It dates back to the year 1937. Apart from this film, several prominent films have been filmed in this studio, such as Gangs of New York (2002), Conclave (2024), and Queer (2024), to name a few.
