Where was Holland filmed? Details Explored

The shooting began in March 2023 and has been shot in the titular town of Michigan. It was also shot in Nashville and Clarksville, Tennessee, by director of photography Pawel Pogorzelski.

1) Holland, Michigan

The film takes place in Holland, Michigan. Initially, the makers wanted to shoot a large chunk of the film in the area but the schedule was changed in just two days. The film features Windmill Island Gardens which is a prominent location of the locality.

Instead of shooting at the actual Tulip Time festival, the makers opted to use archival footage. Despite being the namesake location, very few scenes of the film were actually shot in the Michigan town.

2) Clarksville, Tennessee

A substantial portion of the film was shot in Clarksville, Tennessee, where the real Tulip Time festival happened. Besides that, Nashville has also served as a major filming location. The makers also used the local people of Tennessee as extras in several scenes. The nameplates of several stores were also altered to recreate the 1980s.

In a chat with Interview Magazine, Mimi Cave revealed that the script came when she was editing her first directorial horror film Fresh. She said:

"I’m a bit of a workaholic, so I was already worried about, when Fresh is over, the slump that directors go in. You’re needed and asked questions every day, then all of a sudden it’s crickets. You’re always like, “I’ve got to line my next thing up so I can avoid the void of silence.” After I finish a project, I put myself into it so much that I’m kind of looking for something with a different tone, something I haven’t done before, to keep me excited."

She continued:

"I was getting sent a lot of female revenge cannibal dating thrillers after Fresh—and plenty of great scripts—but I felt like I wanted to do something different. I read Holland and I wasn’t totally sure at first, but it really stuck with me. I felt like I could find my way in because of the characters and where they lived and where I grew up."
