Bono: Stories of Surrender already got a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes. That means we have to see the documentary on the impassioned U2 frontman Bono. It was an emotional moment for him, and before acknowledging Andrew Dominik, who directed it, he said, as Variety reports,

"I’m not a Frenchman. I’m an Irishman. I’m not even a self-made man. You wrote this story. The Edge wrote this story. Adam [Clayton] and Larry [Mullen Jr.] wrote this story. [Paul] McGuinness wrote this story."

The documentary is about his solo tour from November 2022, when he was promoting Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, a memoir he wrote. It will be available on Apple TV+, beginning May 30, 2025.

But that's not all. Bono: Stories of Surrender will also be there for Apple Vision Pro, the latest in the fleet of gadgets of the technology company. The mixed reality headset will give the fans what we should call a metaverse-like experience, the Ready Player One experience.

Mostly, Bono: Stories of Surrender is more of a concert film, as Empire Magazine puts it in their review, than a documentary. There's never-before-seen exclusive footage of his one-man show, but no archives or recordings can pull this one into a documentary umbrella.

Speaking of reviews, there are ten on Rotten Tomatoes, and 80% are positive. Variety's Owen Gleiberman feels that the viewers will get to know a great deal about the iconic singer in the documentary.

While there are songs that, as Bono: Stories of Surrender's logline mentions, "shaped his life and legacy," he also opened up about his mother and father, Iris and Bob Hewson (Bono's real name is Paul David Hewson).

Other than his family, Bono: Stories of Surrender features his band and the activism he's been involved in during his career.

Other than Bono, the members of the band include David Evans (The Edge), Dik Evans, and Adam Clayton. It went through a couple of name changes before it finally became what we know as U2. They debuted with their studio album Boy in 1980 and have released 14 more since. The band's latest studio album, Songs of Surrender, came out in 2023.

As for Bono, he has collaborated with other iconic artists throughout his career, including Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, and more. The 2023 album of the band he worked on with The Edge during the COVID-19 pandemic. The recording for the album took a couple of years.

The band is considered one of the best-selling artists out there, having sold somewhere between 150 million and 170 million albums globally. Trade publication Pollstar reports that U2 has generated over $2 billion in revenue by 2022.

Looking at their awards shelf, they have 22 Grammys to their name, two Golden Globes, eight Brit Awards, and more. Rolling Stone has cited them as one of the greatest artists of all time in a list. The Beatles topped this list (for whom we are getting a four-part biopic by Sam Mendes), followed by Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley.
