Liam Payne last visited Australia in 2018 on Australia's richest race day, October 15, 2024. It was the singer's first performance after One Direction's hiatus. The performance now coincides with the singer's death in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024.
The singer's performance in Australia was somewhat controversial, as Liam had claimed that he had never been to the country. The 45-minute concert featured songs from his solo career, such as Bedroom Floor and Strip That Down, and songs from One Direction's catalog, such as History, Little Things, and Drag Me Down.
Buenos Aires police confirmed the singer's death in a general press statement on October 16, 2024:
"Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo."
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, later added in a statement to Argentine TV:
"He had injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall. There was no way to do anything."
More about Liam Payne and his visits to Australia
Liam Payne first visited Australia in 2012 alongside the rest of the One Direction band. The band attended the Logies Awards, which honors Australian television's best shows and stars.
His second visit to the country was in 2013 and 2014, the latter time having performed at the ARIA awards. In 2015, the band visited the country for the last time before breaking up.
During his first visit to the country with the band, the singer caused some controversy when he visited a sanctuary and claimed to be scared of catching chlamydia while holding a koala. The singer also attempted to avoid fans outside his hotel in 2013 by claiming the grass outside of the hotel to be a snake habitat.
Liam Payne was open about his struggles with mental health issues
Liam Payne opened up about his struggles with mental health issues back in 2019 in an exclusive interview with The Guardian on December 2, 2019. The singer stated:
“Doing a show to however many thousands of people, then being stuck by yourself in a country where you can’t go out anywhere – what else are you going to do? The minibar is always there."
He added:
"My social life completely plummeted. I always feel like you never get past the awkward first 10 minutes at a party, when everyone’s like: ‘Do we get up and dance, or do we just sit here?’ I don’t know whether it made me happier, but it was definitely needed."
In another interview with Men's Health Australia on June 9, 2019, the singer stated:
"I was [drunk] quite a lot of the time because there was no other way to get your head around what was going on," he said. "I mean, it was fun. We had an absolute blast, but there were certain parts of it where it just got a little bit toxic."
Liam Payne's sole solo studio album, LP1, was released on December 6, 2019. It charted at number 17 on the UK album chart and at number 69 on the Irish album chart.
