Snoop Dogg is currently trending after his recent remarks about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies. During his appearance on the August 20 episode of It’s Giving podcast, the rapper shared he was “scared to go to the movies” with his grandson as "they're putting it everywhere."

He explained that he went to see the 2022 animated children’s movie Lightyear with his grandkid, who was reportedly confused after seeing that the protagonist had two mothers.

"What you see is what you see, and they're putting it everywhere… They're like, 'She had a baby with another woman.' Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, 'Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She's a woman!'" the artist stated.
Snoop Dogg continued, "'Oh sh*t, I didn't come in for this sh*t. I just came to watch the god*mn movie.'"

The record producer shared that his grandson kept asking how “she and she had a baby,” as they were “both women.” He added the incident “f**ked me up,” and now he was afraid to go to the theatres as he was unwilling to be thrown in the “middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for.”

Snoop Dogg also mentioned the experience “threw me for a loop” and asked why children needed to see LGBTQ+ representation in underage movies.

"These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They're going to ask questions. I don't have the answer," he added.

Exploring Snoop Dogg’s past remarks about the LGBTQ+ community

In June 2017, Snoop Dogg released the music video for his single Moment I Feared, featuring Rick Rock. In it, the West Coast hip-hop icon initially gave a shoutout to the new generation of rappers.

“I commend the young artists for doing they thing. They different. They look different, they rap different. But sh*t, that’s what hip hop is supposed to be… Originality, I give them a big thumbs up,” the Long Beach native stated at the beginning of the video as a GGN talk show sequence.

However, the 8-minute clip soon showed a fictional new-gen rapper named Fonz D-lo, who was portrayed as a cross-dresser, wearing colorful wigs, dresses, shoes, and carrying purses. One particular look was reminiscent of Young Thug's appearance on the cover of his album Jeffrey.

At the time of the music video’s release, many perceived that it was a shade at Young Thug. Additionally, Fonz D-lo’s remark in the video about his fashion sense was deemed as a dig at Lil Uzi Vert.

“Personally, everybody’s hating on me because they can’t do what I do, the fabrics that I wear,” Fonz D-lo stated, in a similar manner to Vert’s statement about his style on social media.

However, in the face of backlash, Snoop Dogg clarified he wasn’t “poking fun at anybody.” In an interview with HipHopDX, he mentioned:

“It’s a lot of people, it could be, but it’s just me letting people know that I respect what the youngsters are doing. This is what they do. How they do it. I respect that.”

Before this, the Doggystyle Records founder sparked controversy after calling Caitlyn Jenner a “science project” in a June 2015 Instagram post. The now-53-year-old rapper uploaded an image of Akon and wrote in the caption of the now-deleted post:

"Shout out to Akon! He is about to supply 600 million Africans with solar power. I'm really upset that this isn't major news, but that science project Bruce Jenner is #Society."

He also asked people to follow Akon’s life and career for “some real news.” Back then, it was deemed transph*bic, as a couple of weeks before Snoop Dogg’s comments, Caitlyn Jenner came out as a woman.

A year before that, the Gin and Juice artist faced criticism for his anti-gay remarks on Instagram. As per an article published by The Guardian on June 21, 2017, in mid-2014, Dogg shared a screenshot of several men in bed together and captioned, “go suck ya man n get off my line f. A. G.”

In the wake of the latest comments about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies, calls to remove Snoop Dogg as the headliner of the grand final of the upcoming Australian Football League have surfaced online.
