Prince Harry said that his wife, Meghan Markle, gave him advice that he tries to live by all the time. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Harry shared the advice, what it means to him, and how he tries to stick by it.

He said that Meghan told him, “Just stick to the truth.” He said this advice is something he always falls back on.

More on what Prince Harry said about Meghan Markle's advice

Prince Harry explained why those words matter a lot to him. He said, "just stick to the truth," which is the most efficient way to live. He said when you live by truth, you don’t need to remember what lies you said. He also said,

"She said, 'Just stick to the truth. Always.' It's the most efficient way to live. And if you think like that, who would be stupid enough to lie? It takes up too much time and effort."

Prince Harry said he uses the advice in both public and private life. When he must talk about his family, the media, the past, and the conflicts, that is how he tries to lean on telling the truth. He said that is how he deals with pressure.

Why does this advice matter to Prince Harry?

This moment comes when Prince Harry has been away from many royal duties and has had tension with his family. He moved to California with Meghan in 2020. Over the years, there have been disagreements, public stories, memoirs, and interviews. Prince Harry has spoken about the strain with his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William.

He has also written a memoir called Spare. In it, and in other interviews, he says he wanted to set the record straight.

"I know that [speaking out] annoys some people and it goes against the narrative. The book? It was a series of corrections to stories already out there. One point of view had been put out and it needed to be corrected."

In his talk with The Guardian, Harry also said that one cannot truly make up with people, as he believes,

"you cannot have reconciliation before you have truth."

He also said that because of his reunion with King Charles, he feels more connected with the U.K. and more willing to share it with his children.

"I have always loved the UK and I always will love the UK. It’s been good to reconnect with the causes I am passionate about. I have been able to spend some time with people that I have known for so long. It is hard to do it from far away."

The bigger picture

People watching this story are paying attention for several reasons. First, many are interested in how Harry and Meghan handle the royal institution now. They stepped back from senior royal life in 2020.

Second, the idea of truth vs. narrative is central. Harry says there are stories about him and his family that have been told in only one way. He wants to correct them with what he says are his facts, his memory. As he puts it,

"It’s not stubbornness, it is having principles."

Third, he says that Meghan’s advice guides him now more than before. He sees it as a moral compass. It helps him decide what to say and what to do.

Prince Harry’s choice to follow Meghan’s advice, "just stick to the truth," is simple to say. But in his life, it carries weight. It shapes what he says now. It shapes how he defends his story. And it shapes what he hopes will happen next: honest talk, understanding, and maybe peace.
