The sci-fi film directed by Victor Danell, Watch the Skies, is about a daughter who is looking for her father after he disappeared mysteriously. The daughter, Denise, is a tech genius in the film, which is understandable because her father, Uno, was one himself too.
Uno was involved with a UFO research group, so his disappearance naturally raises suspicions, alien abduction, perhaps? But no. Denise eventually finds him, and the truth is far more tragic and unsettling. He didn’t vanish by force; he chose to leave this world behind and remain in the “other” one on his own terms.
In that moment, after she has found her father, she realizes that her father never cared for her, and it was all about his dream or passion, but never her. So she bids farewell and sets him free to roam the universe and returns to Earth.
As of this writing, the movie is sitting fresh, according to the Tomatometer at the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with a 72% score. Audiences liked it too, as the Popcornmeter shows a score of 78% there.
How did Denise find her father in Watch the Skies?
To understand the ending of Watch the Skies, assume that wormholes are everywhere on Earth. That'll set the stage.
Initially, Denise used to think that his father was just mad and chasing after things that never existed. That's similar to the cousins Teddy and Den in Bugonia, a couple of conspiracy theorists who think that this CEO of a pharma company is an alien queen trying to destroy the earth.
And just like the cousins were right, as it turned out that she was indeed an alien queen, Denise's father was right in his own right, too. The things he believed in did exist: UFOs, wormholes, and anything that a normal human would deem a miracle. As Jesse Pinkman would say in Breaking Bad,
"Yeah Mr. White! yeah, science."
Denise comes across a strange phenomenon where a car has fallen from the sky, and it turns out that it was her father's car, as she deduces after investigating it. This investigation leads to further investigations, where she eventually becomes friends with some science people, the ones who used to work alongside her father.
However, Watch the Skies also reveals that her father was a brilliant mind, though one whose intelligence came with a certain arrogance and tendency to look down on those he deemed less capable. She appears to share some of these traits as well, gradually revealing a similar attitude when working alongside people she perceives as less competent.
However, she makes amends with them, especially with this guy called Lennart, who agrees to help, despite their past differences in Watch the Skies. So they put them behind an investigation about her father.
All of this leads to a cop chase at the end, and they end up at a dead end in a building. So they simply drove the car across the building, and, as we already asked you to assume that wormholes are everywhere here, they are caught by one.
The one they are caught in, Watch the Skies, leads them to her father, who asks her to join him to watch and explore the universe happily. That's the moment she sees through him and realizes she was right in hating him, and returns to the new family she has made during this journey.
