The late Liam Payne was born on August 29, 1993. His birth had complications, with the singer not responding in the immediate moments post-birth, leaving him 'effectively dead'. The doctors were able to revive him, but the difficult birth left him with complications.

The late singer had elaborated on his almost stillbirth and the complications from that in his book Dare to Dream – Life as One Direction, which was originally published on September 15, 2011:

"Weird, I know. The doctors couldn’t get any reaction from me so I had to be brought round and although it seemed like I was okay, there were underlying problems. I was born three weeks early and I kept being ill. From the age of zero to four I was always in hospital having tests done but they couldn't find out what was wrong."

The singer continued:

"They discovered that one of my kidneys wasn't working properly and it had scarred. I had to have 32 injections in my arm in the morning and evening to try and make me better. “I've still got both kidneys but one doesn't work so I have to be careful not to drink too much, even water, and I have to keep myself as healthy as possible."

Liam Payne was dealing with mental health issues before his death

Liam Payne was dealing with mental health issues before his death. The singer elaborated on his issues in an exclusive interview with The Diary of a CEO podcast in 2021, stating:

"I was worried how far my rock bottom was going to be. "Where's rock bottom for me? And you would never have seen it. I'm very good at hiding it. No one would ever have seen it... There is some stuff that I have definitely never, never spoken about. It was really, really, really severe. And it was a problem..."

The late singer later added:

"I just kind of feel like I've got more of a grip on life and everything that was getting away from me. I just feel like I've got more of a handle on it. I just needed to take a little bit of time out for myself, actually, because I kind of became somebody who I didn't really recognize anymore. And I'm sure you guys didn't either."

The late singer went on to state that he needed time for himself to take care and that he quit drinking after attending a Hans Zimmer concert. The singer was dating Kate Cassidy at the time of his death.
