Josh and Benny Safdie's last film together, Uncut Gems, came out in 2019, and then they went on to their separate film directions. Like their previous films, this became a hit too, lauded by the critics. However, the audience didn't like it well enough, and kids won't like it either, given the mature themes in it.
As of this writing, the movie has a 91% score at the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes but only a 52% score at Popcornmeter. The website's critics' consensus says,
"Uncut Gems reaffirms the Safdies as masters of anxiety-inducing cinema -- and proves Adam Sandler remains a formidable dramatic actor when given the right material."
Adam Sandler plays the lead, Howard Ratner, in the film, a jeweler who is also a gambling addict. Other than him, LaKeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, Kevin Garnett, and more appear in it. Canadian singer The Weeknd also appears as himself.
We will now see why this 2019 hit might not be a good watch for the kids.
Why isn't Uncut Gems suitable for kids?
Before you read, know that there will be spoilers of the film, so back off now. You wanted to know if the film is suitable or not. You know it's not.
Let's simply begin with sex and nudity in it. There's a scene where a couple is sexting, and the woman sends an image of her wearing lingerie in the conversation. A lot of things are visible through it, so that will be inappropriate for kids.
There's also implied sex in the film, and a sequence where a painting of three naked women can be seen. Not a lot of sex in Uncut Gems, but the nature of the film is pretty vulgar, so to say.
Moderate gore and violence are there too. An individual is injured in a mine, and there's blood everywhere. His bones are exposed too. It can be an unnerving sight for children. In one fighting scene, a man fights with someone at her daughter's school. You sure don't want your kid to expect something like that from you.
At some point, Uncut Gems also brings in drugs, but that is for just one scene where some people are seen snorting lines of cocaine. There are some smoking scenes too, alongside drinking, but they are usually set during social meetings.
However, you need to watch for the language in it. There's some serious profanity there. The term 'f**k' is used almost 500 times in the entire film. All in all, swear words are used around 650 times throughout the story.
Some intense scenes are there too in Uncut Gems. Howard is harassed by loan sharks. There's a scene that takes place in a nightclub, and Howard gets into a fight with The Weeknd, and there's loud music in the background. This isn't really a nice setting for kids.
In one scene, Howard is brutally beaten and forced into an SUV. If a child watches and enjoys something like that, it could potentially influence their thinking in a harmful way.
