Glimpses of the live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon have left fans with raised eyebrows as the franchise dropped its first teaser trailer of the latest adaptation on November 19, 2024. The film is set to be theatrically released in the United States on June 13, 2025.
Based on the original novel by Cressida Cowell, the story revolves around a young and awkward Viking whose innovative methods of controlling and training dragons change the dynamics of the village of Berk. Mason Thames portrays Hiccup, the main character, who makes friends with a rare and extremely dangerous dragon, naming it Toothless.
How did fans react to the first look of Toothless in the teaser trailer?
As seen in the first teaser trailer, the live-action reboot will be close to the original story of the first animated movie. However, the live visuals are very much realistic and lifelike and will reportedly engage viewers in a good way.
Multiple fans have commented on the looks of the dragon Toothless, who, according to them, appears to be perfect. CGI has been profusely used by DreamWorks Animation to give the beast an authentic look and retain its original appearance from the novel.
One user on Instagram, jramz05, has commented on a post saying:
"They found the perfect dragon to play toothless."
Another user, tylertrainerofficial, has mentioned:
"Toothless looks incredible!!"
The viewers have further added that capturing the realism of Toothless in How To Train Your Dragon has been accomplished perfectly. However, its puppy eyes could have added even more authenticity to its on-screen appearance.
One more user, swiftstreamspc, responded:
"This looks good. Live action feels more immersive in my opinion. I never really got hooked by the animated version as an adult or remember watching it. Maybe this will hook me better. I look forward to getting into it."
But there has been some criticism from the audience as well. Some of them have reacted differently to the creation of a live-action film, pointing out that there is no need for it.
As per statements on Twitter, CGI technology is still not mature enough to be working on a live-action remake. It has been further added that maybe the younger generation is only engaging in live-action movies these days!
What else do we know about the franchise?
The How To Train Your Dragon franchise has attained much success in terms of critics as well as box office numbers over the years. It has got multiple Academy Award nominations and has earned more than $1.6 billion globally.
The saga includes sequels, TV series, and spin-off short movies. The latest live-action reboot will be directed by Dean DeBlois, who had also worked as a co-director with Chris Sanders in the original films.
As the first look of Toothless is revealed by Universal Pictures, excitement among fans has peaked, and we have gotten mixed reactions so far. While a majority of them have appreciated the use of CGI to retain the animated look in a live-action film, some of the critics have opened up on a rather different note.
However, the strong cast, including Gerard Butler, Mason Thames, and Nico Parker, along with a substantial amount of animated action, will supposedly do justice to the original story. As viewers eagerly wait to experience the world of fantasy and dragons in IMAX, the detailed plot of the new movie still remains to be revealed.
