Let us explore how the storyline concludes.
What is the plot of Stay?

Kiara (played by Megalyn Echikunwoke) is an author with a PhD who is married to a former Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Milestone aka Miles (Mo McRae). As time went by, their marriage started falling apart.
In the process of concluding a years-long relationship, they realize that a supernatural force is lurking in the corner. Trapped inside their supernatural house, the pair is forced to face the forces within the house as well as themselves, to save their lives and their relationship.
How does Stay end?
Towards the end of Stay, it becomes apparent that the ghost inside the house wants the couple to figure this thing out like a team. In one scene, Miles sees a suicide note that Kiara wrote and hides it in the drawer. It opens on its own, and Miles realizes what she was going through because of their separation. He knew how bright she had been, but their deteriorating relationship had affected her beyond his imagination.
In a flashback, we get a glimpse of when Kiara was pregnant with their son, Jeremiah. On one of his birthdays, Kiara got a call from her publisher that her book received a good review from the New York Times. By the time Miles could arrive and find their son, Jeremiah had accidentally drowned in their swimming pool. This scene was hinted at in an early dream scene of Kiara, where her phone is drowning in the pool.
This tragedy shatters Kiara and Miles' lives and forever affects their marriage. Since then, Kiara carries the guilt of not watching her son for a moment, leading to his demise. As the curtains fall for the film, the couple acknowledges that they must move forward from the guilt they have been carrying about Jeremiah. The ending of Stay also reveals that the ghost that had trapped the two inside the house was their late son.
Jeremiah wants his parents to be together even after he departs from this world. It appears that he is pained to see them suffer because of him. Since the tragedy, life for the two had changed forever. The pain and guilt they were living with had a direct impact on their behavior towards each other, and this was something Jeremiah wanted to change as a spirit. The story boils down to themes like grief, loss, and trauma, and how they can manifest sometimes as a supernatural force. The ultimate fate of Miles and Kiara is in their hands as the film ends on a hopeful note, with the two having realized their mistake.
