Patrick Schwarzenegger has been hyping up Jon M. Chu's onboarding as the director for the upcoming live-action Hot Wheels movie, and fans are convinced that the actor is hinting at a potential casting. Reposting the news about the film, Schwarzenegger posted on X,
Smart. This will be huge I think
His response has led many fans to ask if he's a part of the film, although all the details are currently kept under wraps, and there are no indications around it. Helmed by Mattel, Warner Bros., and Bad Robot, the film is being written by Juel Taylor & Tony Rettenmaier while JJ Abrams' Bad Robot is producing. The action film will bring one of the most successful Mattel products to life- the Hot Wheels, which features a line of sleek, glamorous cars that have become a worldwide phenomenon in its active years.
Mattel Studios’ President and Chief Content Officer Robbie Brenner made a statement regarding Chu's collaboration and told Deadline,
“Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life. His films are visual spectacles — true eye candy — but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames. Paired with Juel and Tony’s compelling storytelling, this team is uniquely positioned to capture the heart, adrenaline, and spirit of Hot Wheels, a leading brand in car culture.”
More details on Jon M. Chu's Hot Wheels film

The Hot Wheels project has been a highly anticipated one among other live-action films being made recently, and Chu's success with the Wicked franchise has only fueled more excitement among fans for the project. As The Wrap reported, Chu's statement about the film reads,
“Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed – it’s about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play. Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to partner with Mattel Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures and Bad Robot to create an adventure that honors Hot Wheels’ legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new.”
Jesse Ehrman, President of Development and Production at Warner Bros. Pictures, added,
“Jon is a visionary director and an incredible partner to Warner Bros. We are thrilled to have him join us, along with the talented writing duo of Juel and Tony. With our collaborators at Bad Robot and Mattel Studios, we can’t wait to bring Hot Wheels to life on the big screen.”
Hot Wheels, launched in 1968 by Mattel co-founder Elliot Handler, was designed as a cooler, high-performance rival to Matchbox cars. Now a global icon, the brand has sold over 8 billion units and expanded its cultural footprint through collaborations across fashion, streetwear, luxury, gaming, entertainment, and motorsports, cementing its status in pop culture. With that being said, the live-action film has quite a lot of expectations riding on it, with the large fandom it has been supported by and all the hype that Chu brings to it.
