US President Joe Biden has come under scrutiny over his recent remarks for Donald Trump’s supporters. His response was a criticism of comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s "floating island of garbage" comment at a Trump rally in New York City.
During a campaign call, Joe Biden's remarks appeared to target Republican supporters in a negative light, stating that "the only garbage floating out there" referred to them. Additionally, he condemned Trump’s anti-Latino rhetoric, describing it as deeply offensive and unpatriotic.
The 45th US President, Donald Trump, responded to his comment in an X post on October 30, 2024, where he stated that both Biden and Kamala Harris were not suitable candidates to hold the US President position. He wrote:
“Now, on top of everything, Joe Biden calls our supporters “garbage.” You can’t lead America if you don’t love the American People. Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have shown they are both unfit to be President of the United States.”
Trump also criticized the remarks at a rally in Pennsylvania, calling them "terrible" and comparing them to Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables” comment during the 2016 campaign. He stated that calling people "garbage" was an even harsher term. He said,
“That’s terrible. Remember Hillary? She said ‘deplorable’ and then ‘irredeemable’ right? That didn’t work out. Garbage I think is worse, right?”
His running mate, JD Vance, joined the criticism, accusing the present President and Vice President Kamala Harris of "attacking half of the country." The Republican candidate remarked that forgiveness was needed because he believed Biden didn’t fully understand what he had said.
The former President had a contentious relationship with Puerto Rican leaders and was hesitant to provide substantial aid to the territory after it was struck by successive hurricanes in 2017.
Biden clarified his remark after Trump seemingly criticized him
During his opening set at Madison Square Garden on October 27, Tony Hinchcliffe made racially charged remarks, including referring to Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage" and stereotyping Latinos as overly focused on having children, triggering a public backlash.
The Trump campaign quickly distanced itself from the comedian's statements. Campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that it was a poorly chosen joke. He also commented that perhaps Hinchcliffe should not have been present at the event.
In response to the remark, the White House clarified that Biden’s comment was aimed at Trump’s divisive rhetoric, not his supporters. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates explained that the current President had referred specifically to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as 'garbage'.
The current President, Joe Biden, also clarified that his earlier remark was aimed at the “hateful” rhetoric regarding Puerto Rico expressed by Republican supporters at the Madison Square Garden rally.
He emphasized that Trump’s demonization of Latinos was unacceptable and asserted that the comments made at the rally did not represent the values of the nation.
Democrats began to distance themselves from Biden's comments, with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressing on CNN that he would never disrespect the people of Pennsylvania or any Americans, even if they supported a candidate he did not.
