Months before its release, Jaafar Jackson's Michael already has an update for a potential sequel, thanks to the immense praise it received online for the actor's unrecognizable portrayal and the premise of a promising biopic. Hours after its release, the first teaser managed to get more than thirty million views, surpassing some major films in the industry, a clear indication of the audience's interest in Michael.

Now, the studio has given fans an update on a sequel, as Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Adam Fogelson has spoken to Deadline about what the film's future looks like, subtly teasing a possible sequel in the near future.

As reported by the outlet, Fogelson said,

“Since the last time we worked together on an earnings call, we’ve had the great pleasure of seeing the director’s cut of the first film, and it is exceptional. While we’re not yet ready to confirm plans for a second film, I can tell you that the creative team is hard at work making sure that we’re in a position to deliver more Michael soon after we release the first film.”

He also spoke about how the film was a highly anticipated project among fans and how Jaafar has brought so much attention and praise to the film as he added,

“People have been waiting a long time for this. I think people are stunned with Jaafar’s (Jackson’s) performance.”

Development for Michael began quietly in 2019 when producer Graham King secured the rights to tell Jackson’s story, with Logan signing on to write the screenplay. Lionsgate officially boarded the project in February 2022, later teaming with Universal Pictures for international distribution and Kino Films for the Japanese release.

Fuqua joined as director in January 2023, the same month Jaafar Jackson was cast in the lead. Over the next few months, the cast expanded, with Juliano Krue Valdi as young Michael, Domingo and Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, Teller as John Branca, and Harrier as Suzanne de Passe. The film also features portrayals of musical icons such as Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Berry Gordy, and Gladys Knight.

The first trailer, released on November 6, 2025, reignited global excitement. Set to an electrifying mix of Jackson’s hits, including Beat It, Billie Jean, Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough, and Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin, the preview racked up immense praise in the first hours, surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4’s trailer performance by 50%. With its vast scale, meticulous attention to detail, and a deeply personal performance at its core, Michael aims not just to revisit a legacy, but to reintroduce the man behind the myth.

Michael will be in theaters on April 24, 2026.
