Wicked: For Good was released theatrically on November 21, 2025, by Universal Pictures. The musical fantasy film is helmed by Jon M. Chu, and it's a sequel to Wicked, which came out in 2024. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd:
"As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to come together one final time. With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good."
Let's explore how the Tin Man and Scarecrow came into life for this film.
Here's how Scarecrow and Tin Man were created for Wicked: For Good
Wicked: For Good features Tin Man and Scarecrow. In a Variety interview, makeup designer Frances Hannon spoke about how Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater transformed into their characters.
Talking about the creation of Tin Man, Hannon said:
“The main thing was to make sure that whatever we did never removed the character from being so accessible and allowing all that emotion to come through. Even though he’s covered in prosthetics, and they were all practical, you still saw Boq underneath it all.”
Mark Coulier, the film's prosthetic makeup designer, emphasised that the makeup shouldn't overpower the character.
“The main thing was to make sure that whatever we did never removed the character from being so accessible and allowing all that emotion to come through. Even though he’s covered in prosthetics, and they were all practical, you still saw Boq underneath it all.”
11 pieces of metal were put on Slater's body, and the entire process took several hours to complete. Hannon also spoke in detail about how Bailey transformed into Scarecrow.
“We didn’t go for that big baggy look over the head with the big rope around his neck. What Paul Tazewell did was brilliant. He went for the straw coming out of the areas of the seams and everything in his uniform. Mark had made a burlap collar so that where the buttons on the shirt were all busting open.”
She added,
“I used blonde in Fiyero’s hair as a very strong point to carry through that change. The blonde in his own hair in film one and the opening of film two, then develops into the straw quality from the field.”
