Roland Orzabal, the co-founder of Tears for Fears, welcomed a child with his wife, Emily Rath Orzabal, at the age of 64. The singer's longtime bandmate, Curt Smith, claims that the couple, who were married in 2020, privately celebrated the birth earlier this summer.
The announcement was made during Smith's interview with Vulture, in which he opened up about why Tears for Fears had decided to postpone their summer tour:
"We were going to tour this summer, but Roland and his wife had a baby in June."
He added:
"So the summer touring obviously was off because you don't want to be away from home that close to having a baby."
Although neither Roland nor Emily made a formal statement, Emily had previously posted pictures of her pregnancy on Instagram, giving fans a hint at the good news along with congratulatory remarks that revealed the baby's unusual name, which was revealed to be Eula.
How did Roland Orzabal meet Emily?
Emily, who is a writer and photographer, first met Roland Orzabal in a restaurant in Los Angeles. Their romance quickly grew, and the two became inseparable. They soon exchanged vows in 2020. In September of that year, they secretly eloped atop Aspen Mountain in Colorado after the pandemic caused them to postpone their initial wedding plans.
In an interview with The Sun, she said:
"We had to postpone our original wedding date in September 2020 because of Covid. I felt as all corona brides have been feeling: angry, sad, gypped, and confused as to when we should have a wedding."
She added:
"Roland and I were in the States for work. We desperately wanted to get married, even just legally, and so to honor our original date, we secretly eloped, just the two of us, atop a mountain in Aspen. It was the most magical moment of my life."
She went on to add that the two weddings were never her dream, but she had to adapt to the situation:
"It breaks my heart that my family could not be there to see it, but no one wanted to risk their safety. Two weddings was never my dream, but we adapted, separating the legal wedding from the celebratory wedding to come."
She concluded:
"In September we were able to use the autumnal flowers we'd originally wanted, and next year we can have all of the spring flowers! We got married at 11,212 ft high on Aspen Mountain, whereas next year will be inside an incredible venue."
The two eventually had their moment the next year. They celebrated with a big wedding at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, with their family and friends.
Roland Orzabal, in several interviews, has praised his wife and given her credit for everything, especially bringing him back together with Curt Smith, a former member of Tears for Fears. In an interview with The Guardian, he said:
"She is an amazing influence – teaching me how to be kind and polite, and not hostile all the time."
Roland's second chance at love
The baby is Roland's first child with Emily, but his third child altogether. He shares two adult sons, Raoul and Pascal, with his first wife, Caroline, with whom he was married for 35 years, who tragically passed away in 2017 at age 54 after battling alcoholism-related dementia and cirrhosis.
In an old interview with The Irish Times, Roland Orzabal reflected on that time and said that the loss of Caroline upset him, stating that his "world sort of fell apart in 2018." Roland Orzabal also revealed that it made his return to music difficult.
He told The Guardian:
"I thought that was it, because Caroline had gone, [longtime Tears for Fears collaborator] Alan Griffiths was gone, and immediately my mind went to Curt."
Later, Roland Orzabal acknowledged that Emily had influenced his reconnection with Curt Smith after years apart and had helped him recover and find music.
The band has postponed their summer tour, but already has shows lined up for Las Vegas later this year.
