Judith Jamison, the international trailblazer dancer who also served as the artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, passed away at the age of 81.
With her impeccable talent and dedication, Jamison broke all barriers in her life. She has been an inspiration to many dancers and those who wish to follow their dreams.
Alvin Ailey's company spokesperson Christopher Zunner told The Associated Press that Jamison faced a brief illness before passing away in New York.
The late ballet dancer grew up in Philadelphia and began her training at an early age. She took to ballet at a young age and at a time when black dancers were rare in the dance form.
Jamison began her journey with the Alvin Ailey Americal Dance Theater in 1965 and soon rose to international fame. After several notable performances in ballet, she went on to star on Broadway. In 1989, she was asked to return to the Alvin company and succeed Mr Ailey as the Artistic Director.
According to the Ailey company's tribute via Instagram, Jamison took the theater to newer heights.
"During her leadership (1989-2011), she took the Company to unprecedented heights—including two historic engagements in South Africa and a 50-city global tour that celebrated the Company’s 50th anniversary."
She worked at the theater till she retired in 2011.
Throwing light on her married life, Judith Jamison was also once married but for a brief period. In 1972, she married former Ailey member Miguel Godreau. However, their marriage was annulled in 1974. The reason behind their separation has not been revealed. Godreau passed away in 1996.
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater pays homage to Judith Jamison
Taking to Instagram, the Alvin company penned a heartfelt note for their former art director Judith Jamison. Sharing a carousel of photos from Jamison's legendary life, they penned her quote,
"Through dance, we’re as close to God as we’re going to get—until he calls us home."
They added,
"It is with heavy hearts we share that Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison (age 81) passed away peacefully today after a brief illness. We remember and are grateful for her artistry, humanity and incredible light, which inspired us all."
The company also reminisced about Jamison's inspiring journey in the industry and how she rose to fame with her dance skills.
Among the many honors, Jamison was also awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 1999, the National Medal of Arts, and the Handel Medallion.
