Filipino American singer Olivia Rodrigo has been making strides in her career, particularly as her songs resonate with a large segment of the Gen-Z population. The singer announced on Wednesday, October 2, that an Olivia Rodrigo: GUTS World Tour concert film is imminent and can be streamed on Netflix by the end of this month.
Born Olivia Isabel Rodrigo, the 21-year-old singer was first recognized for her role on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark, and then for the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which aired from 2019 to 2022.
She has come a long way since then, having released massive hit albums like her debut studio album Sour, which she released in 2021.
However, it was her first single, drivers license, which came out that same year, that really made her a household name across the globe, dominating the US Billboard Hot 100. In this article, we're taking a look at some of the (mostly) highs and lows of her career so far.
Olivia Rodrigo's career, from 2010 to 2024
Olivia Rodrigo was born on February 20, 2003, in California. By age 5, she began attending vocal lessons to enhance her skills, and not long after, she started learning acting.
By 2010, she made her on-screen debut in an Old Navy commercial. By 2015, when she was 12, she secured the lead role of Grace Thomas in the film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success.
The following year, she landed the role that catalyzed her fame on Disney's Bizaardvark as Paige Olvera. By February 2019, she bagged the role of Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The series catapulted her fame to new heights, as she wrote and sang the promo single, All I Want, for the show.
By the third season, she called it quits with acting to focus on her music. In 2021, she released her first single, drivers license, which soared in success and broke several records.
By January of that year, the song had over 15.7 million global streams on Spotify. It then went on to break another record on the platform as the first track to earn 80 million streams in 7 days.
In April 2021, Olivia Rodrigo gifted her newfound fans with her follow-up single, deja vu. The song was yet another success, as was the album that followed, good 4 u, which came out that same year. Her debut studio album also released that month, leaving many to marvel at how the singer scaled the ladder of success in such a short time.
That year, Clash critic Robbin Murray dubbed the singer one of the finest artists of the new age, while according to Variety, she was the "voice of the generation." She broke another record that year with her album Sour, as it became the longest number-one album by a female artist in 2021 to sit atop the Billboard 200. Come June 2021, she was dubbed the Entertainer of the Year by Time.
In March 2022, Olivia Rodrigo partnered with Disney to showcase the behind-the-scenes footage and work that went into the making of Sour. The documentary film, titled Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U, premiered on Disney+.
In September 2023, the singer debuted yet another massive hit album, Guts. Two singles from the album, vampire and bad idea right? became TikTok favorites, contributing to the album's success.
She went on a tour to support the album from February to October 2024, traversing across North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
Throughout her career, Olivia Rodrigo has nabbed a total of 121 wins and a whopping 282 nominations across several award ceremonies and platforms, including the Grammy Awards, Billboard Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards.
