Melanie Brown, more popularly known as Mel B or “Scary Spice” of the Spice Girls, who she co-founded in the ’90s, came forward recently to discuss how she and the comedian Eddie Murphy have grown in their coparenting dynamic.
She told US Weekly in an exclusive interview that their relationship has supposedly evolved for the better after years of turmoil and, following her own journey of healing and personal growth.
"I think being in the kind of [situation] that I was in, it was hard for me to step out and have that relationship [with Eddie] flourish. I managed to do it bit by bit." She said.
According to reports, Mel B and Eddie Murphy dated in 2006 for a short time. Their romance was brief and came to an end before their daughter, Angel Iris Murphy Brown, was born in April 2007. Their breakup was fraught with public drama, including Eddie Murphy’s initial denial of paternity at the time. When a reporter inquired about the baby.
"I don’t know whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn’t jump to conclusions, sir." Murphy said at that time.
According to a report by Capsule98, his words were soon circulated across newspapers' headlines and fuelled the tabloids’ description of Brown as a “gold digger”.
After Angel’s birth, Mel B filed a paternity suit in Los Angeles Superior Court to legally recognize Murphy as the father. DNA testing proved in June 2007 that Eddie Murphy was indeed Angel’s biological father.
Murphy issued a statement at the time through his publicist, acknowledging the paternity and saying that he would accept all of the responsibility for the child as a father (ABC News). The statement stated the issue was a private matter and that Murphy would not make any more public comments on the incident.
