Sports columnist and author Jenn Sterger shared her thoughts about Brett Favre’s 2010 scandal. This refers to the s*xting scandal where Favre allegedly shared offensive texts to Sterger after getting access to her contact number.
Meanwhile, Netflix released a documentary surrounding the scandal, titled UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre. A previous report mentioned that Favre sent him photos of his privates, in addition to unsolicited advances through voicemails and text messages.
According to People Magazine, in one particular scene of the movie, Jenn Sterger said:
“I was never treated like a person. I think one of the reasons why it’s so hard for people to have any empathy for me on the internet is because I’m just a picture to them. And he was Brett Favre.”
Sterger explained that the irony of the situation was that they had never met. Although she worked for the Jets during the same season Favre played for the team in 2008, they never interacted.
She said they had never even been in the same room or spoken to each other, and there was no connection between them. In a 2011 interview with ABC News, Jenn Sterger said her life was turned upside down. She shared that she was trying to do her job, but it became difficult when she found herself at the center of the story.
She described the experience as tough, embarrassing, and humiliating. She explained that the only reason she felt the need to speak out was to clear the air, not because of Brett Favre, but for the sake of her family.
In the documentary, Jenn Sterger said her life was ruined by Brett Favre
Jenn Sterger wanted people to understand who she was and to know that she wasn’t someone trying to cause trouble in others’ relationships or seeking money or fame. As heard from one of the voicemails shared by the media outlet, Brett Favre told her:
“I would love to have you come over tonight. Send me a text. I would love to see you tonight. Just done with practice. If you can make it, it would be good.”
When asked how she recognised who sent her the messages, she said there were clues like pieces of a puzzle. She said the person would share age, hair color, and team membership details.
However, the situation felt difficult for her because he was already married, and it became intimidating. In the trailer of the documentary, Jenn Sterger said:
“Brett Favre ultimately destroyed my life. I was at a game and someone said Brett Favre wanted my phone number. And I just kept saying no. I started getting text messages. And then I started getting voicemails, when I was like, ‘Oh, I am in serious trouble here. When someone shows you who they are, believe them.”
Speaking to ABC News, Jenn Sterger said that when everything started happening, she turned to several people for advice because she didn’t know how to handle the situation.
Everyone she spoke to gave her the same response. They told her that if she valued her job and wanted to keep it, she should stay quiet and focus on her work.
