As per an article by Entertainment Weekly, the director of the movie Midnight Rider, Randall Miller, recently opened up about the tragic accident that led to the cancellation of Gregg Allman's biopic.
During the ongoing shoot of the film in the year 2014, assistant camerawoman Sarah Jones was killed in a tragic train accident. Miller was jailed for the incident as he pleaded guilty to felony, criminal trespassing and involuntary manslaughter. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Miller opened up about the accusations of his crew not having authorization for shooting on the tracks before the accident took place.
Miller claims that the shoot was legit and all permissions were gathered beforehand. He emphasized that the shoot had a proper crew and was not some undecided last-minute side shoot.
As per Entertainment Weekly, Miller said that the company that owned the land Rayonier, had signed contracts with the production team of the movie and had also sent out scouts to guide the team on the location.
"We had a contract to be there." Miller told the publication.
Miller further elaborated that the prime misunderstanding was that the shoot would be handled by Rayonier rather than CSX. CSX is the firm that supplies the rail cars that pass through this property.
As per Entertainment Weekly, CSX claims that they had never granted permission to the team for shooting on the location. A CSX spokesperson told the publication that they have no further comments on the situation and offer their deepest condolences to Sarah's family.
"The legal proceedings concluded years ago. We have no further comment and continue to extend our deepest sympathies to Sarah's family."
Miller completed his 10 years of probation last month. The deceased family had filed a lawsuit against CSX and the producers of the movie and eventually reached a settlement. The movie was about to cast the late William Hurt as Gregg Allman.
About the accident and the demise of Sarah Jones
27-year-old Sarah Jones was hit by a train during the shoot of Midnight Rider in the year 2014. According to Hollywood Reporter, an autopsy report by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the assistant camerawoman sustained multiple injuries, including fractures and amputations.
As per the report “ Jones died of multiple injuries sustained as a pedestrian struck by a railroad train while at work on a movie location,” and the lists the cause of death as “multiple injuries due to railroad train.”
The incident took place in Wayne County, Georgia. Jones was shooting a dream sequence on the train tracks. As per reports, Jones was hit by the train's fuel tank, and she died on the spot. While the crew ran away after seeing a train coming towards them on the track, they could not remove a prop bed on time, which pushed Jones onto the tracks.
Along with Miller, Producer Jay Sedrish was also said to serve a 10-year-long probation and was fined a sum of $10,000. First assistant director Hillary Schwartz was also fined and given probation. Sarah Jones's autopsy was conducted four days after the incident took place, but the report wasn't revealed until the investigation was completed.
