Eric Roberts opened up about his strained relationship with daughter Emma Roberts during an episode of Inside of You podcast on October 22.

While speaking about his new memoir with Michael Rosenbaum; Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far, Roberts was asked about the toughest time of his life.

"Probably the loss of relationship with my daughter. There's not a pain, there's a sadness for the most likely misunderstanding is what I'll have forever, because we're human."

Roberts revealed that the birth of his grandchildren also made him look deeper into his relationship with his own daughter,

"I started accepting that about myself with the birth of my grandchildren. Especially the five-year-old. She was first, and she was a girl, so very vulnerable to me, and took a liking to me at two, two-and-a-half, in a very strong way, and named my wife 'Famma', and we're all very close. So that, and she also looks like Emma. Same coloring. And so it reminds me of what I didn't have."

Eric Roberts has three grandchildren from two stepkids with his wife, Eliza Roberts and one grandchild from his daughter Emma, a 3-year-old son, Rhodes Robert Hedlund.

More about Eric Roberts' relationship with his daughter Emma Roberts

Eric Roberts has been vocal about his estranged relationship with his daughter, Emma. In his recently released memoir; Runway Train: Or, The Story of My Life so Far, Eric notes how his past drug use changed his relationship with Emma and sister Julia Roberts.

He said the "biggest consequence" of drug use was "losing Emma". The actor lost custody of his daughter to her mother Kelly Cunningham, when Emma was a baby and Julia supported Kelly during the custody battle. In the book, he clarified that he didn't believe he deserved to have physical custody of his daughter.

Despite their past relationship, the actor mentioned that he now sometimes connects with his daughter online after Emma "gave permission" for them to "interact a little bit on her Instagram page."

Earlier this year, during an interview with the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Eric mentioned that he is "in love" with his daughter's work and "can't believe how great she's become." Eric noted that he's so proud of her that he "can't see straight" and that she "overhelms" him with pride.

He also added that he's "just so happy being her dad because she's kicking a**."
