Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, defended Tony Hinchcliffe on-air a day after his contentious comments at Donald Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Hinchliffe took to the stage at the rally to call Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.”

In response, here's what Stewart had to say:

"Obviously, in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key demographic … probably not the best decision by the campaign politically, but to be fair, the guy’s just really doing what he does.”

Here's what went down on Jon Stewart's Monday episode

During Sunday's rally, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, popular for his comedy podcast Kill Tony, said:

"There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico."

In response to Hinchcliffe's comments, Jon Stewart said that "for the media," this "was one moment in particular that raised the alarms." He then played a segment of Hinchcliffe’s Roast of Tom Brady set from earlier in the year, as he commented while chuckling:

"Yes, yes, of course, terrible, boo. There’s something wrong with me. I find that guy very funny. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you. I mean, bringing him to a rally and having him not do roast jokes? That’d be like bringing Beyoncé to a rally and not…:

Jon Stewart was alluding to Beyonce's appearance at Vice President Kamala Harris' recent rally in Texas, where she delivered an address instead of a performance.

From there, Jon Stewart segued into Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric:

"We’re only deporting people who’ve come here illegally, or people who have come here legally but sneaky-legally, or people who have children who are actually citizens, or some people who look like they may have come here illegally, or people that have protested the war in Gaza, or a special prosecutor who Trump doesn’t like, Jack Smith — which, by the way, name a more American name than Jack f—ing Smith. Where are you gonna deport him to, Faneuil Hall in Boston?”

He continued his tirade, referencing a moment from earlier when Trump was unable to point out his wife in an image:

"Right now, you think you’re safe ’cause the group Trump’s talking about, it’s not you. As if, ‘Are you sure this isn’t my wife?’ Donald Trump can tell the f—ing difference or even cares.”

Hinchcliffe's jokes at the rally have since sparked widespread backlash, particularly from Democrats. Kamala Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have all since taken to X to condemn his comments.
