Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is bringing together a star-studded cast for the Homer epic, as reports have ensued with details on all the actors and the characters they are playing on screen. Earlier, it was reported that Matt Damon would be starring as Odysseus, while Tom Holland will be playing his son Telemachus. As of now, the role of Robert Pattinson has also been reportedly revealed, as the star is said to be portraying the role of Hermes in the epic. Hermes is portrayed as a guardian god in the poem who helps Odyssey when he is stranded and gives him advice on how to make Circe submit to him. An integral character, Hermes is one of the few Greek Gods who make an appearance in the story.

The news comes from Italian publication Chi Magazine, which further reported that Favigana is brimming with all the stars at the moment, including Zendaya, who is playing Athena, the guide of Odysseus' family who constantly sees them over. Anne Hathaway is playing Penelope, one of the main protagonists in the poem, wife of Odysseus who strives to keep the crown back in Ithaca as she struggles against countless marriage proposals sent her way to protect the crown; Charlize Theron will be playing Circe, a powerful sorceress. Lupita Nyong'o will play the role of Clytemnestra, who is used as a cautionary figure in The Odyssey to parallel the good wife-bad wife trope up against Penelope. Clytemnestra is Agamemnon's wife, who later kills him upon his return from the Trojan War.

The casting details for the film surely look exciting, as the poem itself is a thrilling epic that depicts a tale of bravery, legend, and power. So far, Elliott Page and Mia Goth's roles have not been revealed yet, along with a few others among the famous ensemble that also includes Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Page, Samantha Morton, Cosmo Jarvis, and Ryan Hurst.

Nolan's The Odyssey is all set to be a grand affair as filming has already begun in Cala Rossa, Cala Azzurra, Cala del Bue Marino, and the Castle of Santa Caterina. Chi Magazine has further reported that the cast will move to the Aeolian Islands, where shooting is set to take place in areas such as the rock of Bagno in Lipari and Basiluzzo in Panarea.

The film has been described as

“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

At 2025 CinemaCon, the film took the spotlight as Jim Orr praised Nolan's work on the film and described it as 'visionary', saying,

“We know this film will be a once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would be very proud of."

As fitting as it is as a description, only time will tell if Nolan did justice to one of the most significant texts written in the 8th century.

The Odyssey is set to release on 17 July 2026.
