Project Hail Mary will put Ryan Gosling back in space, according to the footage revealed recently at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The event, a part of Amazon MGM Studio's presentation, had Gosling joining the film's director duo to present the first look of the sci-fi thriller. He appealed for a theatrical release of this film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
Project Hail Mary is scheduled for release on March 20, 2026. In Gosling's words, the film can be said to be one that has:
An “insanely ambitious story" and is "massive in scope.” He added: "We tried to put it on a TV once, [but] it wouldn’t fit.”
The film is an adaptation of an Andy Weir novel of the same name, and Drew Goddard, who adapted Weir's The Martian, is the script writer. The directors, Lord and Miller, are the duo who helmed the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films, The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street. Much like their previous directorials, Project Hail Mary promise lots of humor amid all the action.
Gosling says in the shared footage:
“The astronauts die in space? Who is gonna sign up for that? I put the ‘not’ in astronaut; I’ve never done a spacewalk, I can’t even moonwalk. Some people are not good at things. You have the right stuff. I have the wrong stuff.”
The actor plays Ryland Grace, a school teacher who gets forced into volunteering for a risky space mission by a female official (played by Sandra Hüller, the Academy Award-nominated star of Anatomy of a Fall). Harry Styles' Sign of the Times plays in the background.
Project Hail Mary: The new Andy Weir adaptation takes Ryan Gosling back to space

The first footage from Project Hail Mary introduces Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a school teacher in the middle of one of his classes. Sandra Hüller's character makes him a proposition to save the Earth from an imminent danger. Grace responds:
“I’m sure there are better people than me.”
He is, however, forcefully taken for the space mission. Grace states the obvious:
“Who is going to sign up for that? I’m not an astronaut.”
However, his pleas might have gone unanswered. Gosling, who plays the character, also serves as the film's producer. When introducing this grand-scale film, he said:
“He (Ryland Grace) goes on such a journey as you can see and this is why you go to the movies. I’m not just saying it because I’m in it because I’m a producer on it as well.”
This is the second time Gosling will star in a space drama after playing astronaut Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle's First Man.
Project Hail Mary is currently scheduled for a release on March 20, 2026.
