Alan Ritchson and Kevin James' Playdate delivers a fun mix of suburban chaos and full-blown action. Centering on two mismatched dads whose ordinary playdates spiral into absolute mayhem as they get caught in a criminal conspiracy, the film is already giving off chaotic vibes with a lot of heart.
The trailer kicks off lightheartedly, as we see Brian struggling to bond with his stepson Lucas while Jeff effortlessly nails the cool dad role as he plays catch with his son, CJ. The awkward dynamic quickly turns into a forced friendship when CJ reveals that Jeff isn't really his dad- as a bunch of mercenaries barge in.
Things then escalate quickly, as Jeff and Brian dodge bullets and confusion together. Between car crashes, flying kicks, explosions and a lot of mayhem, Playdate promises to be a ridiculous yet heartfelt ride about unexpected fatherhood and finding courage in all the chaos.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the official synopsis of the film reads,
"When recently unemployed accountant Brian (Kevin James) agrees to a playdate with charismatic stay-at-home dad Jeff (Alan Ritchson) and their sons, he expects an easy afternoon of small talk and football tossing. Instead, he's thrust into a chaotic scramble to stay alive as they are pursued by a ruthless team of mercenaries. "
Alan Ritchson stars as Jeff, a charming stay-at-home dad whose mysterious skill set raises eyebrows. Kevin James stars as Brian, a mild-mannered ex-accountant who is trying his best to survive parenthood. Directed by Luke Greenfield, the film also stars Sarah Chalke as Emily, Alan Tudyk as Simon Maddox, Stephen Root as Gordon, Isla Fisher as Leslie Benjamin, Pajak as Lucas and Banks Pierce as CJ.
More details about Playdate
If you're used to seeing Ritchson as the brawny Jack Reacher on the streaming giant's hit show, Playdate is bringing out a whole new side of the actor with quite a few cackles on the side. Talking to Entertainment Weekly about Ritchson as a comedy star, Kevin James says,
"I knew he'd bring the action. But what kind of annoyed me was how funny he was… I did not expect that."
According to director Luke Greenfield, the story is about "two dads learning how to be great fathers, even if they didn't have great fathers themselves." The film started taking shape in March 2024 in Vancouver, Canada, and went on until April.
Explaining the film's premise, the director tells the outlet,
"Just when you think it's going one way, it swerves into something you never saw coming. But beneath the insanity, there's real heart, pathos, and vulnerability. It's a nonstop series of crazy situations. Brian and Jeff are thrown into something far beyond what either of them anticipated, and they're forced to adapt quickly for the sake of their kids."
Playdate will be available to stream on Prime Video starting November 12, 2025.
