Rumors were floating around that Meryl Streep is in talks for a role in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movie adaptation for Netflix, and Deadline has confirmed the same. Their report reveals that the mega-budget production is considering the multiple Oscar-winning star to play Aslan, the lion in the upcoming movies.
The discussions are still in the early stages. So, it's not confirmed that Meryl Streep will go on to play this role. Still, it's enough to understand the scale and creative scope of Gerwig's upcoming projects.
For the uninitiated, the Narnia films are based on The Chronicles of Narnia, a fantasy novel series by the 20th-century British writer C. S. Lewis. They were previously adapted by Andrew Adamson and Michael Apted for three movies that were released in the 2000s. Now, Barbie director Greta Gerwig is adapting one of the books.
According to Nexus Point News, Gerwig is bringing The Magician’s Nephew, the sixth novel in the series, to life. It tells the origin story of Narnia and revolves around Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer. They uncover the magic world with the help of Digory's uncle. However, the plot details are still under wraps. So, there is no official confirmation of these details at the time of writing this article.
Who else is in talks to join Greta Gerwig's Narnia, besides Meryl Streep?
Deadline recently reported that Daniel Craig, who had a successful run as James Bond in the last two decades, is being eyed for a role in Greta Gerwig's Narnia. Nexus Point News says that Craig is being considered for the role of Digory's uncle, whose powers pave the way to the magic world. However, Craig's casting or role has not yet been confirmed.
In addition to Craig, pop star Charli XCX was reportedly in talks to play the White Witch. This antagonistic character was previously played by Oscar-winning Tilda Swinton in the previous three adaptations. XCX's consideration for this role is one of the ambitious choices in Gerwig's movie, which will also run on IMAX theater screens along with its streaming release.
Meryl Streep will be an addition to this list to help you understand Gerwig's high aim for this project. She previously acted in Gerwig's Little Women. Their upcoming collaboration will reportedly bring her as Aslan, the lion's voice. It was earlier voiced by Taken-fame Liam Neeson. So, Gerwig's adaptation is expected to bring a gender-swapped version of the same character. However, it may not be a challenge for Gerwig, who had already heralded a successful IP like Barbie with a fascinating twist.
