Lord of The Rings alum Sir Ian McKellen recalled an interaction with the late Queen Elizabeth II, which wasn't exactly positive. The actor frightened his admirers after he suffered a fall during his performance at a theatre in London earlier this June.
Since then, he’s been away from the limelight and seldom appears in public to recuperate his health. Speaking to The Times London, McKellen reminisced about the time he was honored by the Late Queen with a medal for his many contributions to the acting industry. Per the X-Men actor, she was “quite rude.”
The two shared a rather crisp conversation that began with the late Queen commenting on McKellen’s time acting. After a friendly banter, McKellen recalled,
“She (the late Queen Elizabeth II) said, ‘Does anyone still actually go to the theatre?’
Possibly disgruntled and offended, McKellen expressed his thoughts on the aftermath of her remark, saying,
“That’s bloody rude when you’re giving someone a medal for acting. It meant, ‘Does anyone care a f*** about you because I don’t. Now off you go!”
The late Queen was known for her curt and unfiltered opinions in public and never minced her words. The Royal Family has thus far refrained from commenting about the event and remain mum.
How did Sir Ian Mckellan injure himself?
Fans were left concerned after news of McKellen’s fall came to light earlier this year. Per Deadline, McKellen was in the middle of his Player Kings performance at the Noel Coward Theatre when he was caught off-guard by a chair, which resulted in a massive fall.
McKellen was immediately assisted and taken to the nearest hospital for medical attention. Turns out, McKellen endured a fracture to his wrist and vertebra, requiring him to take it easy and cancel any such gig until complete recovery.
What role did Sir Ian McKellen play in the Lord of the Rings franchise?
Sir Ian McKellen played the beloved character ‘Gandalf’ in the Lord of the Rings franchise. Gandalf is a powerful wizard from the Istari order. He sports a white robe and has a large staff that concocts magical flames - a medium of his power.
Another reason he’s extremely powerful and not to be messed with is that he owns one of the three rings: The Ring of Fire - Narya. The ring is a primary reason he’s somewhat invincible and has amassed wisdom over the eons of his life.
McKellen last appeared as Gandalf back in 2003 in Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. However, he may reprise his role! Warner Bros. recently announced that there will indeed be another (or several) installment of the beloved fantasy movie. When McKellen was asked about returning, he told People,
“I’ve just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I’ll be playing him.”
More information about his character’s future in the Lord of the Rings realm is yet to be revealed.
