Scott Adams, the man behind the famous comic strip Dilbert, has recently made headlines as he shared the news of his cancer diagnosis.
Adams, 67, revealed the news of his terminal prostate cancer that has spread to his bones in a YouTube livestream on May 19, 2025. With just months to live, he admitted that the pain is constant and that he is getting ready to face death. Amidst his diagnosis, many longtime fans are curious about his personal life, including whether he is married.
Scott Adams has had two highly publicized marriages. He married Shelly Miles on a yacht in San Francisco Bay in 2006. Adams was 49, and Miles, 37, at the time. Adams became part of a stepfamily, as Miles had two children from a prior relationship.
According to Distractify, although the couple lived together for many years, they divorced in 2014. Despite their failed marriage, Adams said they were able to get along following their divorce.
"She moved only a block away and we remain best friends. The problem was never our feelings for each other but rather the restrictions of blending two sets of preferences." Adams in a Psychology Today blog post.
Adams was married again in 2020 to Kristina Basham, a model, pilot, and social media personality. But that relationship, too, ended in a divorce. The two officially announced their split in March 2022. While Adams broke the news on his YouTube channel, Basham, on the other hand, made a cryptic tweet about her divorce and battle with cancer.
They were married for two years. Right now, there is no public evidence of Adams being married or having a girlfriend.
A look into Scott Adams' legacy amidst his cancer diagnosis
In a statement, Adams described his life each day with advanced cancer as “intolerable,” a process he said includes constant pain that is moving around his body. He now supposedly uses a walker because his mobility is deteriorating, and he said nights are worse than his already challenging days.
Scott Adams has had time to grapple with the diagnosis, though, and has already begun to process the news in a manner that is allowing him to organize his personal affairs and say his final goodbyes.
"If you had to pick a way to die, this one’s really painful — really, really painful — but it’s also kind of good that it gives you enough time while your brain is still working to wrap things up." He said in his Youtube live stream.
Adams suffered loss in 2018 when he lost his 18-year-old stepson Justin to Fentanyl overdose. At the time, mourning the loss of his stepson Adams said:
“The little boy I raised from the age of two was dead.”
Adams explained Justin battled with addiction following a car accident in 2014, when he sustained a head injury.
Scott Adams' most popular work, Dilbert, debuted in 1989. The comic strip was a biting satire of the ridiculousness of corporate life, and it became an international phenomenon.
According to Britannica, by the early 2000s, the strip ran in more than 2,000 newspapers in 70 countries and had attracted a devoted online readership.
In 2023 several newspapers across the country, including The New York Times and Washington Post, announced they would no longer carry Scott Adams' comic strip following a racist rant on his online video program. At the time Adams urged White people "to get the hell away from Black people."
Besides cartooning, Scott Adams is a successful writer. His books include How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, and Win Bigly, which focus on personal development and political persuasion.
