Katy Perry, along with Lauren Sanchez and Gayle King, is all set to make a trip to space with Blue Origin. The three stars, along with former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn, make up Blue Origin's first all-female crew.
Katy Perry, along with the rest of the crew, is scheduled to make the trip at 2:30 p.m. BST on April 14, with the trip lasting around 11 minutes. On the morning of April 14, Katy Perry took to Instagram to give her followers a tour of the space capsule where the crew had been training for the last few days. In the video, Katy Perry can be seen clad in a blue spacesuit with "Perry" written on her chest.
"We are the Taking Up Space crew. Of course, that saying has had a different meaning to it. But now, for the first time ever, it's a double entendre."
After her post went viral on the internet, netizens took to commenting on the Pop Base's repost on X. Users questioned the need for pop stars to take on a space mission, with some calling it a "bus ride."
"It is NOT a mission. It is a bus ride for a whopping 11 minutes. They are NOT crew, they are passengers, nothing more. There is absolutely nothing "historic" about this flight. They are accomplishing nothing other than social media clicks." - a user noted
"Chat I don’t have a good feeling about this idk :/" - another user expressed
"this kind of feels like the submarine thing that happened a couple years back." - another user recalled the Titan submarine explosion
"lol, “her space mission.” She’s hitching a ride outside the earth’s atmosphere as a tourist, calm down" - a user opinionated
While some netizens have wished the all-female crew luck, others called them "tourists" and questioned why the mission is called "historic."
"I'm really excited about the engineering of it all" - says Katy Perry ahead of her space mission
Earlier this week, ahead of her space mission with Blue Origin, Katy Perry, while speaking to the Associated Press, noted that she plans to go where other women have rarely gone before, to lay down the path for women in the future.
"I'm talking to myself every day and going, 'You're brave, you're bold, you are doing this for the next generation to inspire so many different people but especially young girls to go, 'I'll go to space in the future.' No limitations."
She also added,
"I'm really excited about the engineering of it all. I'm excited to learn more about STEM and just the math about what it takes to accomplish this type of thing."
The rocket is scheduled for a lift-off on April 14, at 2:30 pm BST, and will fly through space for around four minutes before floating back to the earth. The journey will take 11 minutes.
As per Blue Origin's tweet on April 14, the launch will be streamed live on YouTube at 8 a.m. ET. Blue Origin will also provide a livestream on their website, and the launch is also scheduled to be broadcast on CBS and streamed live on Paramount+.
