Ice Cube addressed what he said about Kendrick Lamar in his latest single, It's My Ego. He sat down for an interview with SiriusXM’s Rock the Bells Radio, where he elucidated that he meant no shade, and instead felt like he and Lamar are very similar. On the track, the bar goes:
"I was Kendrick before Kendrick/Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, like Jimi Hendrix.”
He told host Torae,
"Just, you know, a provocative artist, an artist that said what I felt, put it all out there, very critical of the system and the government and what we have to go through as Black people in this country. I think he's the same kind of artist: a thought-provoking artist. I was that before he was."
Ice Cube says Kendrick Lamar is winning, but Drake could come out on top
The 55-year-old artist also chimed in on the whole Kendrick vs. Drake beef in June this year, when he sat down on The Big Podcast with Shaq to support his basketball league The Big 3. While he divulged that he “approves of rap battles,” he said he thinks Lamar is winning... but Drake still stands a chance.
“That's the essence of the game… As long as it doesn't get physical, 'cause that’s not rap. I think Kendrick is up. When it get physical, that's just street crime."
He continued,
"I think Kendrick is up, I think he’s landed the more hard and effective punches, but that don’t mean Drake can’t get off the canvas. If I was Kendrick, I’d stay locked and loaded just to be ready for whatever’s coming.”
Ice Cube is no stranger to rap beef himself. He had a go at his former group and label, Ruthless Records, back in 1991 when he dropped his diss track, No Vaseline, which, according to Billboard, many consider one of the greatest diss tracks of all time.
Ice Cube reveals the next Friday movie is imminent
The actor cum artist is also marking his return to the big screen with the next Friday movie. In speaking on Gillie Da Kid and Wallo‘s Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the rapper pledged:
"It’s coming back. We gonna do it. We gonna make it dope, make it funny, bring it up to date, introduce new characters, bring back old characters, create the feeling the movie gives you.”
He continued, touching base on why people love the movie:
"People love Friday because everyone experienced it. People love Friday because everyone’s lived Friday. Everyone has lived a thousand Fridays.”
Just this June, in yet another interview, Ice Cube told Flavor Flav:
"We finally got some traction with Warner Bros. They have new leadership. My man Mike DeLuca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday and Players Club and All About the Benjamins — Mike DeLuca was there, so now he’s running Warner Bros.”
He continued, noting that he tried his best to hurry the production along. However, John Witherspoon, Tiny, and A.J. Johnson had passed away at the time, so, things came to a halt.
“Like, man, we keep losing people and y’all keep d*cking around not doing the movie the way it need to be done. They want to do it, but the key is it gotta be done, or we shouldn’t f**k with it. So they finally came to their senses.”
It's My Ego is the first track on Ice Cube's upcoming album, Man Down, slated to drop on November 22. The album is going to be his first solo record since his 2018's Everythang's Corrupt.
