Pitch Perfect actress Anna Camp talked candidly about a very awkward onstage moment during her 2008 Broadway debut in Equus, when she costarred with Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter alum. During her interview on the Podcrushed podcast hosted by Penn Badgely, who is her co-star on the show You, she revealed:
"I could hear every word they were saying."
At the age of 26, Anna Camp was cast as Jill Mason in the Equus revival, which required a great deal of emotional depth and complete nudity. In a controversial moment in the play, which was first written by Peter Shaffer in 1973, Camp's character tries to have sex with Radcliffe's character, Alan Strang.
She saw the experience as intimidating due to unexpected and improper audience behavior rather than the performance itself.
"There would be cameras in the audience. They tell you to put your phone away or not have your phone, but there'd be people with binoculars in the third row."
She remembered being forced to remain still throughout one of Radcliffe's monologues while listening to spectators freely comment on their bodies:
"I remember I had to freeze while [Radcliffe] delivered a monologue, and they would be talking about our bodies."
"I could hear every word they were saying"- Anna Camp recalled

In the interview, Anna Camp revealed:
"I could hear every word they were saying."
As she recalled some of the comments, the 41-year-old actress chuckled. She was particularly struck by the statement:
"'She must be cold.'"
“He must be, too!”
She gave a phony outrage in response.
“We’re all cold. Just leave us alone. We’re naked for you right now. Go home.”
Notwithstanding the discomfort, Anna Camp claimed that the performance helped her face her worries and challenged her fears,
“It was a real test to my fear. Like, what can I actually do when I'm afraid? And how can I say none of these people's opinions matter to me?"
Daniel Radcliffe's Take on the Experience
In the past, Daniel Radcliffe, who appeared in Equus at the age of 17, acknowledged how horrifying the experience was for him.
In 2015, Radcliffe told Playboy:
"I was s--- scared and 17 when I did Equus, which is the age when you're most self-conscious... Looking back, that was mental. I have a lot of respect for myself for having the b*lls to do it, so to speak."
Despite Camp's initial reluctance to accept the role, thinking:
"'I don't want this job. I don't want to get this job. I don't want this job.'"
Anna Camp overcame her worries and demonstrated her range as an actress by performing six evenings a week for five months. She now views it as a turning point that challenged her both personally and professionally, despite the awkward and pushy crowd behavior.
