Rapper Cam’ron seemed to be a welcoming person as he took the blame for basketball player LaMelo Ball getting fined $100,000 for making a homophobic joke. It goes back to November 17, 2024, when Ball used an offensive word during a postgame interview after the interviewer asked him about defending the last shot against Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.

However, on November 20, 2024, during the It is What It is Podcast, the rapper discussed the situation with co-host Mase who said although people must be responsible for their words, these situations could be taken ‘lighter’ as they are players and the words were not directed to a particular person but intended as a joke. Cam’ron replied,

“I blame myself, man.”

He continued,

“Yeah man, I really do man. I blame the east side of Harlem. You got this in Jefferson Projects probably in 1996 when we were saying this. And before that, what the f*ck? God damn, we did this a long time ago. And To be honest with you, this is why we started saying ‘pause.’”

Cam’ron said the statement used to be common, but concerns about sensitivity and potential fines led to its avoidance in recent times. Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball has apologized for his statement, clarifying that the remark was not intended to offend anybody. He said he held no discrimination against anyone.

In an interview piece with GQ from February 2024, the rapper referred to the “pause” game and called out statements that could be homoerotic. This was a practice his hip-hop group Dipset popularized alongside the phrase “no homo.” While the practice was rooted in outdated hip-hop attitudes, he described it as a harmless part of Harlem culture as it was not tied to any specific s*xual orientation.

Cam’ron was once called g*y for wearing a pink outfit

In 2023, Cam’ron addressed comments in his podcast about his s*xuality, especially the ones sparked by his choice to wear pink. Reportedly, in a video shared on Instagram, Cam reflected on being in the public eye, noting the criticism he faced while he dismissed those humorously.

Actor Faizon Love mocked Cam with homophobic memes in 2020, prompting the rapper to respond by sharing a 2018 spoof video of Love auditioning for gay roles. Denying those claims, Cam’ron clarified he had no issue with the LGBTQ community and emphasized that he respected people from all walks of life.

In the GQ interview, he also mentioned having many gay friends and family members, and while that might seem dismissive, the "pause" game on the show has evolved into a self-aware, playful parody. It has added to the show’s quirky and juvenile humor, which is evident from the dynamic between him and Mase.

The rapper recently reflected on reuniting with Jay-Z during the 2019 B-sides concert, where they performed Welcome to New York despite past tensions. After the show, Jay-Z texted him, calling the performance ‘dope’ but he found a follow-up message from Jay-Z puzzling, as it mentioned how fake conflicts could hinder progress.

As he was unsure how to interpret it, he responded by expressing gratitude for the opportunities he, Dame Dash, and Biggs gave him during the formative time in his career.
