Valerie Bertinelli's ex-boyfriend, Mike Goodnough, is accusing her of taking "backhanded swipes" at him in her Instagram posts.
The former Food Network star allegedly took shots at him after he addressed rumors about the pair's engagement. Mike Goodnough, a 54-year-old writer, and Bertinelli, 64, parted ways in November after dating for 10 months.
This Monday, Bertinelli responded on social media to the numerous "messages and replies" he claims to have received. This suggested that the pair "appear to be communicating with each other via our Instagram posts and stories."
"That is not the case," he wrote in a lengthy Instagram post. "I have never at any time posted something on social media for the purposes of communicating with someone indirectly when I know them personally and have ample ways to reach them directly."

In his lengthy Instagram post, Mike Goodnough cleared the air about his relationship with his former partner:
"I have never at any time posted something for the purpose of getting a message to someone or getting reaction out of someone. I’ve never posted something in an effort to impact someone’s feelings about me privately or to influence others’ opinions of them publicly. I am an adult. I am very capable of communicating openly and directly with people I know and care about. I care about Valerie. I have love for her and I always will. I want her to be happy. It will bring me nothing but joy to see that she is."
He continued, observing that the two were together around this time last year, coinciding with the launch of her book. Mike Goodnough stated that it was "one of the most joyful weeks of my life," adding, "Taking true deep joy from Valerie's happiness and success was the easiest thing in the world. It is no harder now."
"Our relationship as partners ended. My caring about her did not," he penned. "Unfortunately, over the past two months, Valerie has been prone to lapsing into a place where she has been playing a one-woman tennis match thinking there is someone on the other side of the net. When in that place, she reads all of my posts, centers herself in them, takes offense over wholly imagined slights, and then lashes out angrily with a “response” to things that were neither to her or or about her. among people who follow us both, that behavior has created the impression that we are going back-and-forth. We are not."
In his concluding paragraph, he doubled down on the claims that he isn't covertly speaking to Valerie Bertinelli, asserting that he is "disappointed in the array of hostile, dishonest, and uncalled for backhanded swipes she continues to take at me." Nonetheless, he claims there is no "war" between them.
"She just won’t stop shooting. Valerie is in a war with her ghosts. I’m just the guy who catches the bullets. And that isn’t new," he said.
At the time of writing, Valerie Bertinelli has yet to respond to Mike Goodnough's comments. She was previously married to Tom Vitale from 2011 to 2022, during which time she described their divorce as "wicked." Prior to that, she was married to musician Eddie Van Halen from 1981 to 2007.
