During a live event with Oprah Winfrey in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Vice President Kamala Harris made headlines with her statement regarding owning a gun and self-defense. The discussion revolved around gun violence, and at one point, Harris announced that if someone broke into her house, it would not bode well for them. She said before breaking into laughter,

"If somebody breaks into my house, they're getting shot. Probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later."

During the exchange with Winfrey, probed Harris about owning a a gun, a fact she mentioned during the presidential debate against opponent Donald Trump on September 10. She noted that she and her vice presidential nominee, Tim Walz, are both "gun owners" and called for an end to the "continuous lying" surrounding this issue.

During "Unite for America," on September 19, she reiterated this stance to Oprah, to which the latter responded, "I didn't know that."

"Here's my point, Oprah. I'm not trying to take everyone's guns away. I believe in the Second Amendment. These are just common sense."

Regardless, the internet had a lot to say, with many noting that the "Trump supporters" would charge her for her comments. "Here comes the trump supporters," one user noted.

Several others shared their views on Kamala Harris' comments.

"It is self defense mind you…," one user pointed out.
"the trumpies are gonna run w this as if they’re entire brand is about dems not taking their guns," another user noted.
"can visualize Fox News spinning this as we speak….“Kamala Harris admits to gunning down innocent intruder, who entered her home to greet her.” just wait," another user chimed in.

Soon, more social media users hopped on the bandwagon to poke fun and share their views.

"This feels like it reversed much of what it aimed to accomplish," another person said.
"Yes he should not have said that," someone stated.
"The comments mad at what she said as if they wouldn't do the same thing if an intruder came to their house be serious," one user commented.

Kamala Harris says she supports the second amendment

During the conversation, Kamala Harris also recanted instances during college town halls last year when she asked students to raise their hands if they've ever had to participate in an active shooter drill between kindergarten and high school. She noted, that almost everyone raised their hands. According to her, it was "bone-chilling."

The conversation also touched on the prevention of gun violence. A survivor of the Apalachee High School shooting school in Georgia went up before Harris to share her grievances. Natalie Griffith noted that she was in class when she was shot twice and showed up on Thursday night still in a cast. Earlier in September, Colt Gray, 14, went to school and opened fire, killing four.

Kamala Harris doubled down on what she thinks is the right way to go about gun control, saying:

“I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence, some people have been pushing a really false choice to say you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s guns away. I’m in favor of the second amendment, and I’m in favor of assault weapons bans, universal background checks, red flag laws."

Winfrey echoed Kamala's sentiments during the event, saying:

“This is not normal, y’all, and this is not right. We as Americans have to do better. Lives are being destroyed.”

Kamala Harris told CNN in 2019 that she possesses a gun "for probably the reason a lot of people do — for personal safety.” Trump, her opponent in the bid to assume office, is a gun-owner himself. However, following his conviction of 34 felonies, his gun license was revoked.
