Mickey 17 is the latest film by Bong Joon Ho, who won an Oscar earlier for his South Korean film Parasite. The black comedy sci-fi film was released in the USA by Warner Bros. Pictures on March 7, 2025.

Here's the official synopsis:

Unlikely hero Mickey Barnes finds himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.

The film was made on a budget of $120 million, and there's been general intrigue about whether or not it has recovered that amount. The good news is that it has finally recovered the amount.

The Robert Pattinson starrer Mickey 17 has been playing in theatres across the globe for close to a month. Its run on the big screen is set to end as it will be released digitally later this month.

Collider has now reported that the film has managed to recover its production budget. It has grossed $43 million in the domestic market and $77 million internationally, making a total of $121 million. This is more than the production budget of $120 million.

The film had its world premiere at London's Leicester Square on February 13, 2025. This was followed by a screening at the Berlinale Film Festival and a release in South Korea (Joon-Ho's home country). There, Mickey 17 managed to mint $20 million.

Despite recovering its budget, the film is not considered a box-office success. If we compare it with Parasite, Joon-Ho's latest film has grossed just half of his Oscar winner's global box-office collection.

Joon Ho has written and directed the film and adapted it from Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey7. Robert Pattinson stars in the titular role as a Niflheim worker. Other cast members of the film include,

  • Naomi Ackie as Nasha Barridge
  • Mark Ruffalo as Kenneth Marshall
  • Toni Collette as Ylfa Marshall
  • Steven Yeun as Timo
  • Patsy Ferran as Dorothy
  • Cameron Britton as Arkady

In an interview with the National Board of Review, the director spoke about how he got fascinated by the concept of human printing in the novel. He said,

"So I first read a ten-page treatment of the novel, and I was just immediately fascinated by the concept of human printing. I had this desire to continuously print out an actor that you kind of feel sorry for! The concept of human printing, it's like two words that should never really be combined."
