Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a rare type of bone marrow cancer. According to a report by NBC News, he is now undergoing treatment in New York prison.

Harvey Weinstein was arrested in May 2018 on the charges rape and se*ual assaults on women from across the film industry. These reports came to light during the revelations made by The New Yorker and The New York Times in late 2017.

Since then, Weinstein has reportedly been found guilty of se*ual crimes like third-degree rape and first-degree se*ual abuse in 2020. He was accused by two women, Mimi Haley and Jessica Mann. The court had sentenced him to 23 years in prison, but it was later overturned via an appeal in April. In 2022, Weinstein appealed a separate conviction for three se*ual charges, following which, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for this case.

Several actors even accused the movie mogul of retaliating against women and ruining the careers of those who turned him down. However, he later denied “any non-consensual s*x.” He was expelled from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences soon after he was convicted of se*ual charges by the jury.

Speaking of his recent diagnosis, Craig Rothfeld, his legal healthcare representative, has declined to comment on his health status, sources informed NBC News.

“It is both troubling and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become a subject of public discourse. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment.” he said in a statement.

New se*ual crime charges levied upon Harvey Weinstein

Many women who were hesitant to come forward during the #MeToo movement in 2020 are now ready to share their stories. One among them is a woman who recently accused Harvey of making se*ual advances against her will at a Manhattan hotel in 2006.

According to the woman’s attorney, she is fully available to speak the truth at the trial and wishes to hold Weinstein accountable, but not to be identified. However, Harvey has pleaded not guilty to the charges levied against him by the alleged victim.

Harvey faced several health issues in the past

Harvey Weinstein has not been in the fine spirits since the beginning of his trials. Recently, he underwent heart surgery on September 9 to address the buildup of fluid in his heart and lungs.

However, his health representative assured him that he is “out of danger at the moment.” Since the surgery, his health condition has been depleting, says a report.

In July, his health representatives informed that he has “a myriad of health conditions,” that included Covid-19 and pneumonia. Other conditions Weinstein suffered from were diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis, and fluid on his heart and lungs.

What is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia is a type of cancer that begins its formation in blood cells of bone marrow. This type of cancer is rare in patients. It is also known as chronic myelogenous leukemia.

When one of the cells transforms into a leukemia cells, it stops maturing and starts to divide at a rapid rate. These cells cause the White Blood Cells to increase.

Once the leukemia cells spread to other organs, they can affect their proper functioning. Leukemia starts in lungs, breast, colon and they spread to bone marrow unlike other form of cancers.

There are several other types of leukemia –

  • Acute myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (AML)
  • Chronic myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (CML)
  • Acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL)
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
