Cooper Flagg, an 18-year-old American college basketball player, is carrying his family's legacy beautifully. Like his parents, Kelly Bowman Flagg and Ralph Flagg, he and his siblings are highly interested in playing the exciting sport.
Now, Kelly and Ralph are parents to three sons: Hunter, Cooper, and Ace. They welcomed twins Hunter and Ryder in 2004. Unfortunately, the latter passed away only two days later. Later, in 2006, Kelly again gave birth to fraternal twins Cooper and Ace.
Presently, Cooper Flagg plays for the Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team. According to the Duke University website, he received prestigious recognitions in the 2024-2025 season, such as the John R. Wooden Player of the Year award and the National Player of the Year honors from NABC and USBWA.
Everything we know about Cooper Flagg and his brothers
As per a People Magazine report, Kelly and Ralph built their home and nurtured their family in Newport. Hunter Flagg, Cooper Flagg, and Ace Flagg grew up enjoying basketball in their driveway.
In a recent conversation with New Center Maine, Ace shared,
"We couldn't play a game in our driveway without someone bleeding. The game would end when someone ran in yelling for mom, but it was always fun."
Appreciation and skills needed to play basketball efficiently run in this family's genes. Since his childhood, Cooper has grown up learning, practicing, and playing the sport.
According to a Bangor Daily News report, he was awarded a college basketball scholarship when he was in eighth grade. Later, he joined Duke University and did not attend high school in his senior year.
Today, Cooper Flagg is a well-known name in the college basketball community, and one of the biggest support systems behind this achievement has been his dad. While speaking with Blue Devil Nation, he shared,
"Getting back in the gym with my dad [is how I stay ready]. I grew up in the gym with my dad. Late nights, early mornings, with him just rebounding for me."
While experiencing motherhood for the first time, Kelly gave birth to twins Hunter and Ryder at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Sadly, the family lost Ryder as he was a premature kid, as per a Town & Country report. Also, Hunter was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.
In a conversation with the Winston-Salem Journal, she shared,
"I never left Portland. After Hunter was born, I said, 'I’m not leaving without him,' and so to have the house and to be able to stay close by. There were times that were sort of perilous during his journey, and I get a call at any time of day and night that I needed to get over there to the hospital. Being three minutes away instead of an hour and a half was huge."
Hunter is pursuing a degree in sports management at the University of Maine as a junior. Previously, he played basketball at Nokomis Regional High School.
In fact, Cooper Flagg and his brothers represented the same team while studying at Nokomis Regional High School. They won a state championship game, too.
Ace is a high school senior. He has joined the University of Maine and is playing for the team. He spoke to the Bangor Daily News and said,
"A large factor of my decision was a love for the state of Maine as a whole. Being able to play and represent the state I love is extremely special to me. I am excited to be able to play for Coach Markwood, with the culture he’s created at Maine. It is an amazing opportunity."
In February 2025, Ace played an integral part in helping the Greensboro Day School in North Carolina win the state title. Cooper Flagg expressed his appreciation for his twin brother following the game in a press conference and lovingly shared that he is "proud of him."
