The juice is loose once again at the box office. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had a record-breaking opening at the domestic box office in its debut weekend. With that, the legacy sequel has dethroned Deadpool & Wolverine from the top spot at the US box office for the second time in its seven-week run.
A sequel to Burton’s 1988 film Beetlejuice, the film has achieved the year’s third-biggest opening at the box office after Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Box Office collection
Reportedly made on an estimated budget of $100 million, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has collected over $110 million already in its premiere weekend from approximately 4,575 theaters.
With this roaring opening, the film has broken several other box office records. It has had the second-best box office opening for its eccentric auteur-director Tim Burton, after 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, which had a $116 million debut.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has also become the all-time second-biggest opening in the September box office, just below IT: Chapter 1, which had a box office debut of $123 million, another Warner Bros. production.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice International Box Office Collection
The international box office performance of the film, however, has been a slight disappointment, with a modest $35.4 million debut from 69 global markets.
If the weekend box office is any indication, the sequel is likely to make further record-breaking collections in the domestic market, as the film has struck a chord with the audience.
Deadpool & Wolverine Box Office Collection
Regarding Deadpool & Wolverine, in its seventh weekend, it has grossed around $7.2 million which brings its domestic collection to a whopping $614 million.
The R-rated Marvel superhero film is enjoying a magnificent run in the global box office, which has brought its estimated total into $1.29 billion and has already been touted as the 22nd highest grossing film of all time globally.
It is to be seen if it can break Barbie’s record of $1.445 billion before ending its lifetime run at the global box office.
What is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice about?
Set 36 years after the original film, the sequel focuses on Lydia Deetz and her daughter. The daughter accidentally opens a portal to the Afterlife and frees Beetlejuice once again.
Despite mixed reviews, the film has far exceeded box office expectations. Critics attribute its success to the strong nostalgia for the original film and the enduring cultural relevance of Beetlejuice.
The success of the film is also due to the return of almost all the iconic characters from the 1988 cult film with some interesting additions to the eccentric cast. The film stars returning cast members Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Michael Keaton with new additions of Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci among others.
