Anne Hathaway's next project, Mother Mary, brings her back on screen after the success of The Idea Of You, and this time the actress is slipping into the shoes of a music star who is a fictional blend of someone part Lady Gaga and part Taylor Swift.
The story revolves around her character leaving her tour to get back to an old friend, played by Michaela Coel, who shaped her life and is now a fashion designer. Directed by David Lowery, the film “turns on the making of a dress, which is spectacular,” has “a couple of demented flashbacks,” and shows Hathaway in new territory, exploring a fresh genre. Talking about the film, the actress told Vogue,
“What struck me right away, reading the script, is that you can’t ‘perform’ Mother Mary. If I got the part, I would have to become material David could craft with.”
She's also performing her own music, joined by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff who have created some spectacular original music for the film. But the film was shot before the pop star's musical presence was created. Talking about that Hathaway said,
“I had to submit to being a beginner. The humility of that — showing up every day knowing you’re going to suck. And it has to be okay. You’re not ‘bad.’ You’re just a beginner. Getting to that mindset — I had to shed some things that were hard to shed. It was welcome. But it was hard, the way transformational experiences can be hard.”
Anne Hathaway's projects following Mother Mary

Anne Hathaway has a seriously exciting lineup ahead, and it’s clear she’s not slowing down anytime soon. The year following Mother Mary is set to be a busy one for Hathaway, who is part of four major films.
On the nostalgia front, fans are getting a double dose. She’s officially returning as Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada 2, reuniting with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt. Filming is underway, and it’s locked in for May 1, 2026.
Then there’s Verity, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s twisty, best-selling psychological thriller. Hathaway takes the lead alongside Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson, with Michael Showalter as the director. It’s scheduled for a May 15, 2026, theatrical release via Amazon MGM Studios.
Hathaway is next teaming up with Christopher Nolan once again for The Odyssey, an adaptation of the ancient Greek epic by Homer, that also stars Zendaya and Tom Holland among an ensemble cast. It’s set to release in IMAX on July 17, 2026.
She will next be seen in Flowervale Street, a sci-fi thriller from It Follows director David Robert Mitchell. She stars opposite Ewan McGregor in what’s being kept tightly under wraps, but it’s being backed by Bad Robot and Warner Bros., so expectations are high. The film is set to hit theaters on August 14, 2026.
It is not yet revealed when Mother Mary will hit theaters but the A24 film is eyeing a 2025 release. More details are awaited for now.
